The Monterey County Health Department has confirmed that Christina Sandera, Clint Eastwood’s longtime partner, passed away due to a heart attack.
The immediate cause of her death was cited as cardiac arrhythmia, a condition characterized by irregular heartbeats due to malfunctioning electrical impulses in the heart, as defined by the Mayo Clinic. A secondary contributing factor to her death was reported to be atherosclerotic coronary artery disease, as per a recent report in the New York Post.
Eastwood publicized the sad news of Sandera’s demise last Thursday, though at that time, the cause of death was not disclosed. She was 61 years old when she passed away on July 18.
Sandera was part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Foundation’s board of directors, where she made significant contributions as the chief developer and manager of a globally recognized equestrian center in Carmel Valley.
The organization praised her dedication towards land and marine animals in a statement on Instagram. The couple annually hosted the Sea Stars Gala, and despite her connection to the acclaimed Oscar-winning actor, she preferred to stay out of the spotlight.
The chapter director of the foundation described her as a person who was always ready to get her hands dirty and actively participate in her interests.
Eastwood, 94, and Sandera maintained a private relationship for the past ten years. They reportedly met at Eastwood’s Mission Ranch Hotel and Restaurant, where Sandera was employed as a hostess. The pair shared a home in Carmel-by-the-Sea, a quaint coastal town on the Monterey Peninsula where Eastwood had once served as mayor.
Sandera, an animal rights advocate, often joined the “Unforgiven” actor at various red carpet events, including the 2015 Academy Awards, which marked their first public appearance as a couple. That year, Eastwood had directed and co-produced “American Sniper,” which was nominated for six awards.
“Christina was a compassionate, loving woman, and I will deeply miss her,” Eastwood expressed in his statement last Thursday.
Eastwood’s youngest child, Morgan Eastwood, also paid her respects.
“Our entire family is devastated by this loss,” she expressed on her Instagram story. “We are grateful to Christina for being a loving partner to my Dad. You will be missed.”
