This American actor’s influential role in a classic Clint Eastwood movie led to his casting in one of the leading roles in the series “Yellowstone”.
Clint Eastwood’s name is synonymous with western films. He has made a significant impact as both an actor and director in this quintessential Hollywood genre and achieved international success, particularly through Sergio Leone’s Dollar Trilogy.
Undoubtedly, Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone, would have loved to cast Clint in his series. Unfortunately, this dream never came to fruition, much to the disappointment of Clint’s fans and lovers of the western genre.
Clint Eastwood’s Influence on Yellowstone’s Casting
Despite this, Clint Eastwood indirectly influenced the casting of Yellowstone. Luke Grimes, who portrays Kayce Dutton, the youngest son of John Dutton, was selected for the role thanks to his performance in the Clint Eastwood-directed film, American Sniper.
In this war film starring Bradley Cooper, Luke Grimes plays Marc Lee. This soldier, who struggles with doubt, was the first NAVY SEAL killed during the second Iraq War. His performance, which embodied the moral complexity of American soldiers, drew criticism from Marc Lee’s widow but also garnered praise from critics.
Everyone Loves Clint Eastwood
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Luke Grimes revealed that his performance in American Sniper contributed to his casting in Yellowstone. The similarities between the characters of Marc Lee and Kayce Dutton were apparent to co-creators Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, leading them to see Luke Grimes as the perfect actor to play the ex-NAVY SEAL in the western series.
“I heard they watched the film while they were writing the series (…) I don’t know if that increased my chances or put me at the top of the actor list, but I know they saw the film and they’re big fans of Clint Eastwood, like me,” he explained in the interview.
Luke Grimes thought his time with Yellowstone had ended when the series concluded in late 2024, after five seasons. However, he was persuaded to appear in the spin-off series, Marshals: A Yellowstone Story, which is set to air starting next March.
The series from the Yellowstone universe are available exclusively on Paramount+.
