Western enthusiasts, meet your (not so) new fixation. If you’ve missed this hidden gem of the genre, it’s time to catch up on Netflix with the stunning, feminist western series known as “Godless”.
Set in the American West of the 1880s, notorious criminal Frank Griffin and his outlaw gang have one mission: to seek revenge on Roy Goode, their former accomplice who betrayed their brotherhood. On the run, Roy takes shelter with Alice Fletcher, a hardened widow and outcast, in the isolated mining town of La Belle, New Mexico – a town entirely built and governed by women after a mining accident wiped out most of its male population.
Things get complicated when Griffin learns that Roy is hiding in La Belle. The townspeople – particularly the women – must band together to defend against the criminal and his murderous gang.
This unique, exquisitely beautiful mini-series western stands its ground against the likes of Yellowstone! Created, written, and directed by Scott Frank, who is known for “The Queen’s Gambit” and co-written films like Minority Report and Logan, Godless is a masterpiece of the genre and television in general.
The series offers a well-crafted storyline, a beautifully narrated tale, stunning cinematography and breathtaking landscapes of New Mexico, along with endearing characters brought to life by an exceptional cast. The cast includes Jack O’Connell (Unbroken, Starred Up) and Michelle Dockery, who is far removed from her role as Lady Mary in Downton Abbey, forming an unlikely, absolutely captivating duo. But they aren’t the only ones who shine: alongside them are the superb Merritt Wever (Unbelievable, Marriage Story), Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom, Speed), Scoot McNairy (True Detective, Argo) and Sam Waterston (Law & Order) – to name a few.
Netflix
Named among the top 10 of 2017 by The Washington Post and Vanity Fair, the show, co-produced by Steven Soderbergh, has made its mark on television – after all, it nearly reaches perfection according to AlloCiné viewers who rated it 4.4 out of 5!

Indeed, over its seven episodes, Godless received no less than 12 Emmy nominations – and won three: Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries for Merritt Wever, likewise for Jeff Daniels on the male side, while composer Carlos Rafael Rivera won for Best Original Music for the show’s opening – which, in addition to its beautiful melody, is also visually stunning.
Netflix
Less traditional than its counterparts, Godless stands out from other western films or series while closely aligning with historical authenticity in its set and costume design – all while finally giving importance to its female characters, who are often sidelined in westerns.
It’s impossible not to get drawn into the unforgiving world of the Wild West, with its horseback riding, gunfights, tough guys, and equally tough women.
Godless, created by Scott Frank, starring Jack O’Connell, Michelle Dockery, Scoot McNairy…
Season 1 available on Netflix.
