Once again, Selena Gomez has silenced social media critics who body shame, in the process, revealing another health issue she is dealing with.
The actress from “Only Murders in the Building” and founder of Rare Beauty cosmetics, responded to comments about her weight on TikTok, sharing that she suffers from small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. This disclosure came shortly after her appearance at the American French Film Festival in Hollywood last week, where she attended the premiere of her movie “Emilia Pérez”.
At the October 29 event, Gomez, who previously starred in the Emmy-nominated show “Wizards of Waverly Place”, posed in a tight black dress. Some TikTok users, in a post that has since been deleted, reportedly noted that Gomez was hiding her body by placing her hands across her stomach, according to TMZ. Gomez, who has previously dealt with body shamers on social media, responded to the video saying: “This makes me sick.”
Following this, 32-year-old Gomez revealed that she has SIBO, as seen in various screenshots shared on social media. “It flares up. I don’t care that I don’t look like a stick figure. I don’t have that body. End of story.”
She continued: “No I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.”
The Mayo Clinic states that SIBO happens when there is an “abnormal increase in the overall bacterial population” in the small intestine, especially with bacteria that are not typically present in that part of the body. SIBO, also referred to as blind loop syndrome, often occurs “when a circumstance — such as surgery or disease — slows the passage of food and waste products in the digestive tract.” Gomez, a former Disney Channel child star, disclosed in 2017 that she had undergone a kidney transplant due to lupus nephritis, a condition where the autoimmune disease lupus results in kidney failure.
Symptoms of SIBO encompass bloating, abdominal discomfort, and nausea.
Gomez has always been open about her physical and mental health struggles, including her fight with lupus and her experiences with bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression. In September, Gomez shared that she can’t bear a child due to her myriad health problems and will likely consider surrogacy or adoption when she opts to start a family.
“That was something I had to grieve for a while,” she disclosed in an interview with Vanity Fair published a couple of months ago.
In February 2023, Gomez also openly addressed her weight and body shamers. During a TikTok live, she shared that her lupus medication causes her to retain water. “Not a model. Never gonna be,” she asserted at that time, reassuring her followers about their own beauty.
“I just want people to know that you’re beautiful and you’re wonderful and yes, we have days when maybe we feel terrible, but I would much rather be healthy and look after myself,” Gomez stated then, further adding “my medications are crucial and I believe they help me.”
