According to the CEO of AMC Theatres, the launch of Beyoncé’s cinematic experience, “Renaissance,” didn’t go as smoothly as planned. The film was released through this cinema chain.
In a recent interview with Variety, Adam Aron, who heads up the largest theatre network in the country, revealed that the distribution agreement with the artist almost collapsed following the premature leak of the project’s details.
“The leak of the secret nearly caused Beyoncé to abandon the film project,” said Aron.
This disclosure comes months after “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” was widely released, following the phenomenal success of the concert film “Eras Tour” by Taylor Swift, distributed by AMC.
Aron shared that AMC had gone to extensive lengths to keep the “Eras Tour” film a secret, a covert strategy that gave them an edge in ticket sales and reportedly caused dissatisfaction among other theater chains.
To make amends with their counterparts in the industry, AMC decided to approach the release of “Renaissance” differently. They gave other exhibitors an early, discreet notification about the film to ensure a fair competition.
However, according to Aron, “At least six movie circuits leaked the news. They didn’t hold up their end of the bargain.”
When The Times reached out for comments, neither AMC nor Beyoncé’s representatives were immediately available for a response.
“Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé”, showcasing stunning scenes from the singer’s worldwide tour, hit theatres on December 1 and raked in $44 million at the global box office. This was only the second film distributed by AMC, which was previously solely an exhibitor.
After the global success of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” which grossed $261.7 million globally, AMC is planning to release “two to three” concert films per year, as revealed by Aron to Variety. Theatre owners are exploring alternate content options like live music and sports to boost attendance, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 lockdown.
