The accomplished actor Jeremy Renner has landed his initial film role since his nearly life-threatening accident with a snowplow. Renner is the newest addition to the star-studded cast of Rian Johnson’s upcoming “Knives Out” film, titled “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” as confirmed by a Netflix representative to The Times on Thursday.
The actor known for his role as Hawkeye is now part of an already impressive cast that includes Mila Kunis, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, and Daniel Craig who is reprising his role. Other notable cast members are Josh O’Connor from “Challengers,” Cailee Spaeny of “Priscilla” fame, and Andrew Scott from “Fleabag” in this intriguing murder mystery. Johnson serves as the film’s writer and director.
“Wake Up Dead Man” marks the final film in Netflix’s mammoth $450-million, two-movie deal. “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” (2022), the company’s ninth most-viewed English-language film ever, has garnered over 136 million views. Lionsgate distributed the first film, which raked in approximately $313 million at the worldwide box office.
On New Year’s Day 2023, a 7-ton snowplow tragically ran over Renner. While he was clearing his driveway, he was ejected from the machine. When Renner tried to halt the snowplow as it descended towards his nephew, he was caught in the machine’s trajectory, which left him critically injured. The accident resulted in 38 fractured bones, a punctured lung, and severe chest injuries.
“I relive it every night,” Renner shared with The Times in May. “It’s in my visions. It’s in my dreams and my waking thoughts.”
Medical professionals initially predicted it would take him years to walk again, according to Renner. However, owing to his self-proclaimed obstinacy, he managed to walk with a cane within three months.
Renner shared with The Times that recovery is a “one-way street,” stating, “It’s not even [like] a piece of Ikea furniture — there are no directions. You go one direction: You get better. How easy is that? Just remember what you did yesterday, or couldn’t do, and then try to do it today.”
Renner resumed his acting career in January, filming Season 3 of the Paramount+ series “Mayor of Kingstown,” which debuts on Sunday.
“To try to create some truth and then get the audience to believe it, while I’m just trying to learn to walk again, to put one foot in front of the other and not get up in agony. I’m doing all these things to find my footing on the planet again,” Renner stated.
Season 2 of “Mayor of Kingstown” premiered a mere two weeks after Renner’s accident. The series, developed by Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, is based in a town with a prison where Renner portrays the eponymous mayor. It delves into topics such as racism and corruption within the American for-profit prison industry.
