Ian McKellen’s Fat Suit Prevents Major Injury in Dramatic Stage Fall! Must Read!

Ian McKellen’s Stage Accident Saved by Fat Suit

According to Ian McKellen, his fat suit played a crucial role in preventing serious injuries when he experienced a fall from a stage during a West End show back in June.

During a recent interview with Saga magazine, McKellen elaborated, “I was in a fat suit for the role of Falstaff, which acted as a cushion and protected my ribs and joints from severe damage. I count myself fortunate.”

McKellen was playing the character of John Falstaff in the theater rendition of “Player Kings,” which integrates Shakespeare’s “Henry IV” Part 1 and 2. Set in the year 1403, the plot revolves around noble insurgents plotting against King Henry IV. McKellen, known for his role in “X-Men,” stumbled off the stage into the audience’s front row after tripping over a newspaper during a battle scene and getting his foot entangled in a chair. He cried out for help as he fell.

“My vertebrae is chipped and my wrist is fractured, and they’re not fully healed yet,” McKellen shared with the magazine. “I’ve been hesitant to go out as I’m fearful of being bumped into, and I’m dealing with agonizing shoulder pain due to the jolt my entire body took from the fall.”

The day following the mishap, McKellen utilized X, previously known as Twitter, to express gratitude towards his fans for their outpouring of support. He also announced that he had received medical attention from a team of specialists. While he didn’t go into detail regarding his injuries, he mentioned that the doctors were optimistic about his swift and complete recovery.

However, due to the injuries, he had to pull out from the production and is currently recuperating with a neck brace.

Reflecting on the incident, the “Lord of the Rings” actor told Saga, “I felt like it was the end of something significant. It was deeply distressing. I didn’t interpret the end as my demise, but more as the conclusion of my involvement in the play.”

Despite the fall, the “X-Men” actor was keen on emphasizing that his accident was not due to his age.

“I have to constantly remind myself that I’m not too old for acting. It was just an unfortunate accident,” said the actor, who is 85 years old. “Even though I didn’t pass out or feel dizzy before the fall, I haven’t been able to return to the stage, and the show has carried on without me.”

Several weeks after his incident in July, McKellen posted on Instagram to commemorate the final performance of “Player Kings” without his presence and announced his plans to attend the finale. David Semark, McKellen’s understudy, assumed the role for the national tour and the concluding three shows.

McKellen wrote in the caption, “On the day of the 101st and final performance of Player Kings — without me — I celebrated by shaving Falstaff’s beard, which had been growing for 9 months. I will be among the audience for the matinee in Newcastle.”
