The 96th annual Academy Awards were held last night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Despite a brief interruption due to protests demanding a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, the film “Oppenheimer” came out on top, winning a total of seven awards including best picture, director (Christopher Nolan), and lead actor (Cillian Murphy).
“Poor Things” also had multiple winners, including lead actress Emma Stone. The awards for best screenplay went to “American Fiction” and “Anatomy of a Fall”. An emotional highlight of the evening was when Da’Vine Joy Randolph won the Oscar for supporting actress for her role in “The Holdovers”. The documentary short winner was “The Last Repair Shop,” which was distributed with the help of the Los Angeles Times.
Just as it was throughout most of the previous year, all eyes were on “Barbenheimer.” The film “Oppenheimer” was a favorite, leading in nominations with 13, followed by “Barbie” with eight. “Poor Things” garnered 11 nominations, while “Killers of the Flower Moon” collected 10.
