“House of the Dragon” has made its anticipated return! The first episode of the second season of the “Game of Thrones” prequel has finally aired, and fans are flooding social media with their reactions. Let’s dive in.
Caution, spoilers ahead. It’s recommended to have watched the first episode of the second season of “House of the Dragon” prior to reading this article.
After a two-year wait, the second season of House of the Dragon has finally landed on your screens! The continuation of the Game of Thrones spin-off series, promising to be blood-filled, has started its weekly broadcast on the MAX platform, which has just arrived in France.
As a reminder, this adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire and Blood is a prequel series focusing on the tragic history of the Targaryen family, fraught with tension, betrayals, envy and complex alliances, nearly 200 years before the events of Game Of Thrones.
A First Episode Setting the Tone
After a first season full of twists and turns, notably marked by the tragic death of Lucerys, Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) son, “accidentally” killed by Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell), Alicent’s (Olivia Cooke) son, while pursuing him on his dragon Vhagar.
This event will tip the balance in the conflict pitting Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney), who rules the Iron Throne thanks to the scheming of his Hightower family and allies, against Rhaenyra Targaryen, the eldest daughter of the late King Viserys I.
The war between the Greens and the Blacks is declared and after a necessary period of mourning, Rhaenyra wants blood: “an eye for an eye”. She seeks to avenge her son Lucerys’s death and wants his killer to be slain as well.
Her husband (and uncle incidentally) Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) will take her words literally and will hire small-time mercenaries to kill Aemond in his sleep. But the hitmen will make a mistake – an event called “Blood & Cheese” in George R.R. Martin’s novel – and will attack the children of Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban), Aegon II’s wife (and sister incidentally).
The helpless woman will witness the murder of her son, Aegon’s heir, and flee to find her mother Alicent, who is sharing an intimate moment with Knight Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel). A rather hypocritical behavior from the two characters who had previously criticized Rhaenyra’s attitude.
Most fans are thrilled by this first episode of House of the Dragon’s second season, even though some are disappointed by the turn of events in the “Blood & Cheese” incident in the series, which differs from the book.
With this first episode of the second season, House of the Dragon has plunged into the heart of the story and started the famous “Dance of Dragons”, a bloody war over several years that ravaged the Targaryen empire. And the upcoming episodes promise further twists and especially more deaths.
