Game of Thrones Fans Rejoice! 2 New Series in 2026, And a 3rd One Already Buzzing!

Next year, HBO Max will premiere two “Game of Thrones” spinoff series, and there is already buzz about a third spinoff that hasn’t been officially ordered yet.

2025 turned out to be less than stellar for Game of Thrones fans, however, 2026 is shaping up to be a promising year. Two series are slated for release on HBO Max, the third season of the prequel “House of the Dragon” (expected next summer) and the brand new series “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” (starting January 19).

Two spinoffs set for 2026, while a third is in the works

This spinoff is based on the collection of short stories “Tales of Dunk and Egg” by George R.R. Martin. It takes place 70 years after the conclusion of “House of the Dragon” (which is slated for five seasons) and about a century before the start of “Game of Thrones”.

So, two spinoff series from the “Iron Throne” universe are planned for 2026, and a third could also be in the pipeline. A new prequel has been in development for several months, and fans of the saga are already excited and eagerly anticipating its release.

What will the third Game of Thrones prequel be about?

This new Game of Thrones spinoff would also be a prequel, but set well before the events of the other three series. It will follow the story of King Aegon Targaryen I, the first ruler of the Iron Throne and conqueror of the Seven Kingdoms. This tale is recounted in the book “Fire & Blood”, which also inspired the series “House of the Dragon”.

Scriptwriting for the series has been handed over to Mattson Tomlin, who is also working on the screenplay for “The Batman II” (shooting has not yet begun). The American screenwriter revealed that he is closely collaborating with George R.R. Martin, indicating a highly faithful adaptation of the American author’s works.

A 2026 release for this show is obviously not feasible, but many are hoping that production for this new prequel could begin next year. This would bring the total number of concurrently running Game of Thrones series to three, or even four if you include the animated series “Nine Voyages” focusing on the early years of Corlys Velaryon.

All spinoff series from the Game of Thrones universe can exclusively be found on HBO Max.
