30 Years of Stargates, Aliens, and Memorable Characters

You may remember, premiering in July 1997 on Showtime, a show quickly built its reputation as a notable benchmark among the sci-fi TV series. Its name? Stargate SG-1. And if you recognize this title, there’s a good reason!

Loosely adapted from the universe established by Roland Emmerich’s 1994 film Stargate, the series further explores the concept of the Stargate, a celestial portal that allows those who cross it to travel to the far reaches of the galaxy. Leading a team of specialists on this hazardous expedition, Lieutenant Jack O’Neill encounters numerous characters and confronts many dangers from all corners of the galaxy… and from his own planet!

A true cultural wave, Stargate SG-1 left a significant impact on multiple generations and established itself as one of the most renowned series, on par with Lost and Prison Break. Available in its entirety on M6+ since the first day of this year, the series boasts numerous plot twists, revolutionary special effects for its time, and more importantly, its roster of memorable characters.

Before you embark on your journey of (re)discovering this iconic work of pop culture, let’s take a quick look at the characters that will accompany you on your journey!

Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O’Neill

Former member of the United States Air Force, Jack O’Neill is initially introduced as a nihilistic character: devastated by the suicide of his son, plagued by nightmares and dark thoughts, he is chosen to lead several dangerous missions across the galaxy, during which he manages to regain his faith in life, largely due to the encouragement from his crew.

Despite the challenges he has faced in his life, Jack O’Neill is known to his men for his strong character, biting humor, and above all, his respect for his peers. Straightforward and honest, he is the captain any explorer could wish for.

Initially portrayed by Kurt Russell in the film, Richard Dean Anderson (famous for his role as MacGyver) took over the role in the Stargate SG-1 series, giving this legendary character a new, equally renowned face!

Michael Shanks as Daniel Jackson

First appearing on the big screen, portrayed by the impressive James Spader, Dr. Daniel Jackson made his comeback in 1997 in the spin-off series, this time played by Michael Shanks.

Far from being as daredevil as his friend and superior Jack O’Neill, Shanks fills the role of the scholar for the team: an archaeologist and linguist by profession, fluent in dozens of Earth (and extraterrestrial!) languages, this captivating character quickly established himself in the hearts of viewers as one of the key figures in the series. His role in Season 5, in particular, has left a lasting impression on Stargate SG-1 fans, who still remember a certain episode…

Amanda Tapping as Samantha Carter

A key figure in the Stargate universe, appearing in SG-1 as well as Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, the brilliant Samantha Carter seems to amalgamate the strengths of all her colleagues: as brave and experienced as Jack, as insightful and knowledgeable as Daniel, Samantha is the brain of the group. Taking on the role of both a big sister and love interest for the team members, Samantha is nonetheless decidedly determined to prove that her place is justified by her (very) numerous skills.

The very popular British actress Amanda Tapping, later seen in Supernatural, plays this fan-favorite character throughout the saga, with an unmatched screen time of 238 episodes.

Christopher Judge as Teal’c

The most famous alien in the Stargate universe, Teal’c is a Jaffa, a humanoid race subjugated by the Goa’uld people, mortal enemies of humans and some of the most dangerous predators in the galaxy. Originally a slave, Teal’c made the radical decision to aid Jack and his team, betraying his masters and traditions to save the lives of his new friends. Determined to free the Jaffas from the control of Goa’uld, Teal’c joins the ranks of SG-1.

Fascinated by honor and integrity – but also by donuts, that delightful human invention – Teal’c is portrayed on-screen by the towering Christopher Judge, who video game fans will recognize as the voice of the powerful Kratos from the God of War series.

Indispensable for fans of science fiction as well as TV series, the complete Stargate SG-1 series can be found now on M6+.
