Exclusive: Amy Nicholson Shakes Up Hollywood as New Film Critic for L.A. Times!

Accomplished Los Angeles-based film critic, journalist, and podcaster, Amy Nicholson, is set to take on the role of the newspaper’s film critic, following an exhaustive search that spanned several months.

“My passion, my energy, and my heart reside in Hollywood,” Nicholson expressed. “It’s an honor to uphold the Los Angeles Times’ legacy as the incoming chief film critic of the paper. I’m excited to be in the front row as contemporary creators showcase the timeless allure of cinema.”

“Our audience takes film criticism very seriously, and my dedication to highlighting the finest in this field remains steadfast,” said Joshua Rothkopf, the film editor. “I’m excited to welcome Amy, a writer of profound insight and flair, to our team.”

Nicholson is joining a team that has bagged three Pulitzer Prizes for criticism in the previous decade. This includes her predecessor, Justin Chang, who clinched this year’s prize for his work with The Times in 2023.

With a career decorated with awards from organizations such as the Assn. of Alternative Newsmedia, the SoCal Journalism Awards, and the National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards, Nicholson has held the position of chief film critic at LA Weekly since 2013, and then at MTV News starting in 2016. Her writing has graced publications like the New York Times, Variety, the Washington Post, the Guardian, and Rolling Stone. She holds memberships with the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. and the National Society of Film Critics, and has been a jury member for Sundance and SXSW, as well as the FIPRESCI juries at the Moscow International Film Festival and Cairo International Film Festival, among others.

She co-hosts the podcast “Unspooled” with comedian Paul Scheer, where they aim to compile a list of the top 100 movies of all time. A devoted Lakers fan, Nicholson also claimed the first prize at this year’s L.A. County Fair for her sugar cookies.

Nicholson will assume her new role from Monday.
