A significant number of viewers felt let down by the final episode of Stranger Things, but the creators of the Netflix series left behind a subtle nod for their most dedicated fans.
While Stranger Things aired its final episode almost a week ago, fans are far from ready to bid it farewell. Some viewers, deeply disappointed with the ending, firmly believe that Netflix has a hidden ninth episode up its sleeve. However, the creators of the series, the Duffer twins, have clearly moved on and are working on a spin-off that will introduce new characters and a fresh setting.
Even though the writers didn’t provide answers to all our questions, they did sprinkle in a few hidden details that only true fans would pick up on. For instance, in the last episode, when Joyce and Hopper officially get engaged, Hopper reveals that he was offered a job in Montauk, close to New York.
A place we are all too familiar with…
The Roots of Stranger Things
About a dozen years ago, when the Duffer brothers decided to write their own series, they based a part of the story on highly classified projects undertaken by the CIA. These projects were named MK Ultra and Project Montauk. Before settling on Stranger Things as the final title, the writers pitched their pilot to networks and platforms under the name “Montauk”.
We explain everything about these two projects in this video:
Sending Hopper to Montauk seems more like an Easter egg than anything else. If the Duffers are working on a spin-off, it definitely won’t be set in this American town – that would mean repeating the same story. This also doesn’t imply that we’ll see the sheriff in a derivative series. The writers have confirmed that they are done with their Stranger Things characters.
But it is likely to involve the government’s covert operations. The Duffers have indeed revealed that the spin-off will start with the stone found by young Henry Creel during his encounter with the scientist in the cave.
This piece from Dimension X had corrupted the young boy, placing him under the influence of the Mind Flayer. It’s likely that the spin-off will narrate a part of the experiments conducted by the government in Nevada in the 1950s. And on paper, we’re very excited about this.
