If you’ve been keeping up with social media recently, you would have caught the fervor (or madness?) of “Stranger Things” fans who are convinced that Netflix had planned a secret ninth episode to truly round off the series.
Yes, Stranger Things enthusiasts were indeed let down by the conclusion of the sci-fi series. While some were able to accept it, others found it harder to move on. A few days ago, a wild theory surfaced online: Netflix was supposed to release a ninth episode on January 7, which would truly wrap up our heroes’ journey in Hawkins.
Supported by compelling evidence (which, admittedly, is quite impressive) and using the hashtag CONFIRMITYGATE, viewers fueled this theory over the days: they were, in fact, convinced that Vecna had ultimately triumphed and was controlling the townsfolk.
A visual example that corroborates this: during Dustin’s speech at the high school, everyone holds the same position as Henry at the lab, and Billy/ Will when they were under the Mind Flayer’s control. But most importantly, this surprise episode could or should (as yes, it only exists in the fans’ imagination) answer ALL the questions left hanging at the end of the series.
The Significance of the Number 7
The choice of January 7 is not random as it frequently appears according to fans. This is similar to the number 7 dice seen at the end of episode 8, which refers back to the first episode of Stranger Things when Will reveals to Mike that he rolled this number and thus lost to the demogorgon:
January 7 is also a date that Netflix has been hinting at for several weeks as part of a global promotion for 2026. And it hasn’t missed: yesterday the platform unveiled its lineup for the upcoming year, sharing a few snaps of its future productions. But nothing about a Stranger Things episode.
Nonetheless, fans gathered on the website yesterday, patiently waiting for the release of this secret episode that Netflix never announced. This led to a surge in traffic and eventually a server crash around 2 a.m. French time (8 p.m. in the U.S.).
While fans may be disappointed, they can still revisit the Stranger Things universe in a special documentary set to premiere on Netflix on January 12.
