Godzilla vs Kong: Epic $80 Million Smash! Find Out How It Conquered the Box Office!

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” dominated the weekend box office, outdoing projections with a domestic revenue of $80 million. This makes it the second most successful opening of the year, only outperformed by another Warner Bros. and Legendary movie, “Dune: Part Two.”

Premium viewing experiences such as Imax and Dolby Cinema accounted for 48% of the film’s earnings. Additionally, the movie made $114 million in international markets, bringing its worldwide total for the weekend to $194 million, as reported by Warner Bros.

The film received an A-minus rating on CinemaScore, signifying that audiences felt their expectations were met. Despite this, the movie didn’t fare as well with critics like The Times’ Katie Walsh, who commented, “‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ has a frantic energy that is enjoyable until it becomes exhausting and overpowering.”

Returning cast members from the 2021 Wingard-directed “Godzilla vs. Kong” include Rebecca Hall, Kaylee Hottle, and Brian Tyree Henry. This time, they are joined by Dan Stevens and Alex Ferns. The film’s two iconic monsters are forced to unite in order to combat a variety of other creatures.

As the fifth installment in the revamped MonsterVerse franchise, the film’s box office performance marks the second most successful opening weekend for the series, only surpassed by the $93 million brought in by “Godzilla” in 2014.

In a discussion with The Times’ Tracy Brown, Wingard explained that the decision to make another film featuring these iconic monsters was straightforward.

“Nothing can truly prepare a filmmaker for the challenges of creating a movie that features characters of varying scales, from 6-foot to 300-foot, and all the complex mechanics that come with producing a kaiju movie,” said Wingard. “I knew I wasn’t finished with the series because I recognized the untapped potential that these monsters offered.”

“New Empire” was the sole new release in the weekend’s top five. “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” which topped the box office the previous weekend, came in second for its sophomore weekend, pulling in an estimated $15.7 million, bringing its total to around $73.4 million as reported by Comscore.

“Dune: Part Two” earned $11.1 million, raising its domestic total to over $252 million in its fifth week of release. The film’s worldwide box office tally through Sunday amounted to $626.1 million, according to Comscore. Meanwhile, “Kung Fu Panda 4” made about $10.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $151.7 million in its fourth week of release.

The original horror movie, “Immaculate,” featuring Sydney Sweeney, ranked fifth with a weekend estimate of roughly $3 million, pushing the film’s overall earnings to $11.1 million after its second week.
