Beloved Fantasy Series Vanishing from Netflix in 2 Weeks! Say Goodbye NOW!

Netflix is about to lose Shadowhunters, much to the chagrin of its fan base. The platform had been the exclusive distributor in France for this fantasy series produced by Freeform from 2016 to 2019.

The series was an adaptation of the bestselling literary saga The Mortal Instruments (City of Bones) written by Cassandra Clare, which has sold over 50 million copies. Here’s the synopsis:

Set in contemporary New York, humans are unaware of the demonic forces battling around them. Among them, Clary Fray discovers on her 18th birthday that she is not an ordinary teenager.

Equipped with certain powers that she doesn’t yet fully understand, the young woman is abruptly thrust into the dark side of our world, where Shadowhunters fight against evil creatures. By teaming up with other Hunters, Clary fulfills her destiny, while continually learning new revelations.

Fans were thrilled!

When Freeform announced in 2015 that they would be bringing Clary and Jace’s adventures to the screen, fans were thrilled. The cinema had previously attempted to adapt the series, but without success. The movie released two years prior starring Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower was intended to be the first of a trilogy, but due to disappointing box-office returns (only $13 million in profits) and negative reviews, Constantin Films decided to abandon the sequel project and turn to television instead: hence, Shadowhunters was born.

Young actress Katherine McNamara was cast to play Clary, alongside Dominic Sherwood (as Jace). Initial feedback from The Mortal Instruments fans was pretty positive: although the fantasy series takes some liberties with the books, the TV format allows it to do justice to Cassandra Clare’s magnificent work, which combines folklore about vampires, werewolves, and other shadow creatures with societal topics like homosexuality and self-acceptance. It managed to score a solid rating of 3.9 out of 5 on AlloCiné.

When Shadowhunters was threatened with cancellation after Season 3, fans rallied en masse to save it. Freeform ultimately produced a 2-hour finale to wrap up the storyline, while leaving the door open for a possible continuation if another network was willing to pick it up. That never happened.

Shadowhunters will leave Netflix on December 31.
