Stallone & Samuel L. Jackson’s Missed Tarantino Film Meetup 28 Years Before Tulsa King!

Long before their on-screen interaction in the series “Tulsa King”, Sylvester Stallone and Samuel L. Jackson nearly co-starred in a Quentin Tarantino film.

It wasn’t until 2025 that Sylvester Stallone and Samuel L. Jackson shared a scene. The third season of the series Tulsa King marked the first time these two American film legends appeared together, playing former prison mates who join forces to stand up to a formidable New York mobster.

Sylvester Stallone turned down Tarantino

This meeting of the two American actors could have taken place thirty years earlier. In 1997, as he was planning his third film, Quentin Tarantino thought of bringing Stallone and Samuel L. Jackson together in his film Jackie Brown. The former would have played an aging criminal who reconnects with his former accomplice, a quirky arms dealer played by the latter.

Unfortunately, Sylvester Stallone had to turn down the role due to scheduling conflicts. “I was offered the role in Jackie Brown, but they wanted me to audition while I was working in Miami. I told them I couldn’t make the audition, but I would be happy to take on the role. Well, it didn’t go any further,” he said in 2010 in an interview with Tecknikart.

Sly / QT: the second missed opportunity!

The American filmmaker then found a prestigious replacement: Robert De Niro. For the record, this missed connection between the actor and the director is not the only one: Tarantino approached Sly to play the villain in Death Proof, but Sly declined the offer for more personal reasons.

So it was without the help of QT that Sylvester Stallone was able to (finally) cross paths with Samuel L. Jackson. And this collaboration may not be the last! Following his appearance in Tulsa King, Samuel L. Jackson will soon star in his own spin-off titled NOLA King. A cameo by Stallone in this new production is not out of the question!

The first three seasons of Tulsa King are now exclusively available on Paramount+.
