Clooney and Pitt Reunite in GQ Interview
Hollywood stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt recently sat for an interview together, bringing their famous camaraderie back into the spotlight. The interview, which was released on Tuesday as part of GQ’s September cover story, served as a precursor to the duo’s upcoming comedy movie “Wolfs”. The film’s plot centers around two competing fixers who are engaged for the same task, providing a fitting backdrop for the stars’ real-life rapport, as described by GQ’s Zach Baron.
The Hollywood heavyweights, who share a friendship that spans over two decades, bantered and completed each other’s sentences throughout the interview, seemingly without a worry in the world.
The extensive Q&A session was peppered with light-hearted ribbing, observations about their age – Clooney is 63 and Pitt is 60 – and discussions about their enduring fame and friendship that has withstood the test of time in Hollywood. There were also mentions of the bygone studio era, the need to protect Clooney’s 7-year-old twins, and a cameo by Amal Clooney. The interview also featured some fashion talk, playful and photogenic portraits of the duo, and criticism of certain film directors (more on that later).
Despite their celebrity status, the camera still loves them, and they’re well aware of it.
“We’ve been friends for a long time,” Clooney admitted. “And it’s important to check in on each other from time to time. Life gets complicated, and you need to ensure everyone’s okay.”
Pitt echoed this sentiment, saying, “George is excellent at understanding the dynamics and potential outcomes. I often turn to him when things get tricky. There’s a comfort in knowing that George might understand something that no one else does, without it needing to be discussed.”
The rapport between the stars of “Ocean’s Eleven” and “Burn After Reading” was evident throughout the interview. They recounted anecdotes and conversed in a shorthand that comes from years of friendship. Notably absent from the discussion, however, were any political references or mention of Clooney’s influential op-ed urging President Biden to withdraw from the 2024 election. Pitt’s personal life was also largely unaddressed, save for a vague admission of having made “four or five dumb things, and just keep[s] going.”
The interview was conducted at Pitt’s Miraval estate in the South of France, currently embroiled in a legal dispute with Pitt’s ex-wife, Angelina Jolie.
Clooney didn’t shy away from expressing his displeasure with directors Quentin Tarantino and David O. Russell.
“Quentin recently made some comments about me that I found irritating,” Clooney said. “In an interview, he downplayed my status as a movie star and challenged my filmography since the millennium. That upset me because that time frame includes the bulk of my career.”
Tarantino, known for “Pulp Fiction” and “Inglourious Basterds,” did publicly criticize Clooney’s work last summer, prompting Clooney’s sharp response.
Clooney went on to say, “I’m not afraid to give as good as I get. However, it’s crucial to remember that a good director and screenplay are what keep us in the game. I’ve learned from making some really bad films that you can’t turn a bad script into a good movie. But you can mess up a good script.”
Clooney was less forgiving of Russell, the “American Hustle” and “Joy” director. Recalling their work together on “Three Kings,” a 1999 war heist film, Clooney expressed his frustration with Russell’s on-set behavior.
“As you age, how you spend your time becomes increasingly important. Spending five months of my life working on a good film like ‘Three Kings’ was marred by the miserable experience of dealing with David O. Russell. At this point in my life, no film is worth that kind of stress, regardless of how good the end product might be.”
Pitt added, “It’s also not worth it to keep repeating ourselves. It’s just boring. We’re both doing a lot of things outside film, which is really intriguing.”
As of Wednesday, representatives for Tarantino and Russell have not responded to requests for comment from The Times.
