Stephen King’s Iconic ‘Jaws’ Shark in HBO’s R-Rated Series? Shocking Truth Revealed!

“It: Welcome to Derry” has aired two episodes on HBO Max, yet the infamous clown Pennywise is nowhere to be seen. When will the most renowned character of this universe make his grand entrance? Let’s find out from the creators!

Despite releasing two episodes of “It: Welcome to Derry”, audiences are left questioning the whereabouts of the most famous clown in horror cinema. As the iconic character from Stephen King’s novel has terrorized generations of readers and viewers through “It” and “It: Chapter 2”, fans are eager to see Pennywise, once again portrayed by actor Bill Skarsgård, make his return.

“Our Jaws shark”

In an interview with Screen Rant, Andy and Barbara Muschietti detailed their approach to the horror series, emphasizing the special role of Pennywise. They argued that Pennywise is such a crucial character that he should be used sparingly.

Director Andy Muschietti stated: “It’s a gradual buildup; you’ll understand that this anticipation is intentional as we delay the clown’s appearance.” Producer Barbara Muschietti added: “He’s our [Jaws] shark. We need to deploy him in his full complexity at the right moments, or he loses his power. I’m absolutely convinced he’s still terrifying thanks to this balance.”.

A series that deviates from the novel

In the same Screen Rant interview, series co-writer Brad Caleb Kane expressed his determination to deviate from the original novel to better remain true to it. His approach is to explore the universe with a contemporary perspective to make it timeless:

“The benefit of long narratives is that we can focus more on the other forms Pennywise can take to scare the characters, and we can delve deeper into their personalities. […] To genuinely scare people, it has to resonate with them. [We need to] take these characters and make Pennywise’s attacks […] very close to reality.”

So when will the character make his comeback? The writer responded with a smile: “When we bring him back and utilize him, it will be spectacular. And it will be far more brutal than anything you’ve seen in the movies so far…” This definitely whets our appetite!

“It: Welcome to Derry” is available on HBO Max, with a new episode every Monday.
