Shocking HBO Series: Stephen King Adaptation Too Scary for under 18, Forced to Change Finale!

The show “It: Welcome to Derry” is doing well on HBO Max, but it has come to light that many aspects of the plot had to be altered at the last minute. And it’s surprising just how significant these changes were!

After the success of It and It: Chapter Two, Andy Muschietti (director) and Barbara Muschietti (producer) embarked on writing an original series based on Stephen King’s novel. Until then, everything was going according to plan. However, they didn’t anticipate one of the most significant labor disputes in Hollywood history.

Historical Strikes

In 2023, two consecutive strikes halted Hollywood: the writers’ union strike and the actors’ union strike. These labor disputes caused major disruptions in American film production, leading to the suspension of several projects, including It: Welcome to Derry.

In an interview with SFX Magazine, the Muschietti couple shared their experiences: “We had filmed 90% of the first three episodes” before the situation was stalled for 8 months, reveals Barbara Muschietti. “Look, I support the writers and actors,” adds Andy Muschietti, “But for those of us in the middle of filming, it was challenging.”

“We Changed the Ending”

According to the producer, the most significant impact on the series was having to change seasons (from summer to winter), which disrupted not only the schedules but also the overall vibe of the series: “Overnight, we had to work with different seasons. It was a summer series, but suddenly, it wasn’t. We had to create a different finale, with a different atmosphere.”

Another major issue involved the actors. The main cast of the series consists of preteens, so when filming resumed 8 months later… the characters were not exactly the same: “The kids were growing up. Their voices were changing. The actors’ schedules suddenly became chaotic. It was also a massive challenge for the studio.”

This makes us wonder how the series will handle this time gap between episodes 3 and 4! It: Welcome to Derry is now available on HBO Max, with a new episode each week.
