The sequel to the animated film “Inside Out 2” brought to the big screen a variety of emotions such as anxiety, embarrassment, envy, and boredom. The film proved to be a box office goldmine, much to the delight of its creators.
Arriving nine years after the first film, “Inside Out 2” brought audiences back into the mind of the 13-year-old protagonist, Riley. The film, featuring a mix of new and familiar emotions, captured the hearts of moviegoers globally.
The 2024 movie year started slowly, with the worst Memorial Day weekend box office numbers in decades, excluding 2020 when theaters were shuttered because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This caused widespread concern about the future of the movie industry.
However, the release of “Inside Out 2” has turned things around.
Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, said the success of the Pixar sequel was expected due to its “almost limitless demographic appeal.”
“‘Inside Out 2’ saved the summer movie season of 2024,” Dergarabedian wrote in an email to The Times. “Just when people were beginning to lose hope due to the slow start in May, ‘Inside Out 2’ changed the mood in Hollywood from gloomy to joyful in one spectacular opening weekend.”
This summer has been particularly good for animated films. “Despicable Me 4” has earned $437.8 million worldwide, making it the first animated franchise in history to surpass $5 billion.
Despite this, the star of the summer is undoubtedly “Inside Out 2”. Here are some of the records the film has broken to prove it.
Sommaire
Top-grossing film of 2024 domestically and internationally
Five weeks after its release, “Inside Out 2” has grossed $1.36 billion worldwide ($574 million domestically), making it the only film this year to reach $1 billion.
The film continues to perform well and has yet to premiere in Japan, Finland, Netherlands, Sweden, and the Czech Republic, where it’s expected to top the box office.

Third top-earning animated film ever
“Inside Out 2” currently ranks third in this category, just $13 million behind the second highest-grossing animated film, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”. Dergarabedian predicts that “Inside Out 2” will surpass the video game adaptation by the end of the week.
The top-grossing animated film is Disney’s “Frozen 2,” which earned $1.45 billion worldwide.
