Fans of House of the Dragon were in for a surprise right at the start of the first episode of the new season! A fresh introduction sequence premiered, still accompanied by Ramin Djawadi’s composed theme (which also featured in the Game of Thrones series) in a slightly modified version.

In Season 1, the opening credits followed a trail of blood through the metallic corridors of a model of the ancient city of Valyria. This introduction, which did not resonate with all fans, outlined the important points of the Targaryen clan’s history, focusing particularly on King Viserys I – the incumbent on the iron throne at the beginning of the series.

A Shift to Align with the Original Series

Was the change in the opening credits due to it not resonating with fans? In Season 2, the sequence features an embroidered tapestry, gradually stained with blood, which revisits the Targaryen clan’s past as well as the events that will unfold in the upcoming seasons of the show, starting with the eagerly anticipated Dance of Dragons…

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, the series creator Ryan Condal elaborated on this unexpected change in opening credits. He revealed that the idea was not to outdo the Season 1 credits but rather to pay homage to the Game of Thrones credits:

In the original series, the opening credits change as the geographic evolution unfolds, showing us more details about Westeros. We wanted to do the same with our credits, but by the end of Season 1, we realized that the bloodline and the stories we were alluding to that season – spread over 20 years – had already reached their conclusion.

House of the Dragon: A Fresh Start for Season 2

Indeed, the death of King Viserys I has reshuffled the deck, leaving the iron throne to be contended by two heirs: his daughter Rhaenyra, born of a first marriage, and his son Aegon, the product of his second union with Alicent Hightower.

Rhaenyra considers herself the rightful heir due to her status as the eldest, while Aegon feels entitled as the crown is supposedly to be passed on only among male Targaryen descendants.

Season 2 of House of the Dragon, therefore, marks a brand new beginning, and the onset of a bloody war between the two factions of the House of Dragon. Season 1 ended with the death of Prince Lucerys; while Rhaenyra has sought refuge in mourning, her husband Daemon was quick to devise a robust battle plan to make Aegon II pay.

“We decided to go for a radical change. A chapter has turned, and we are now at war, it’s a constantly moving story and we wanted to visually represent that,” he said. “I thought of the Bayeux tapestry (which chronicles the conquest of England by William the Conqueror, ed), which serves as both a work of art and a source on the medieval history of that time.”

More Targaryen Spin-offs Could Be in the Works

It’s worth noting that the history of the Targaryens could lead to additional Game of Thrones series. While the upcoming spin-off titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will only tangentially cover the history of the iron throne, an active development is underway for a new prequel focusing on Aegon I Targaryen, the conqueror of the seven kingdoms.

The series House of the Dragon draws from several chapters of the book Fire & Blood. This approximately 1000-page volume (available in two parts, or in a complete edition from J’ai lu) traces the entire history of the Targaryen clan, from the time of Aegon I to the fall of the mad king Aerys II, a few years before the start of Game of Thrones.

Adaptations of George R.R. Martin’s novels remain top priorities for the franchise, as the American author (who has yet to finish writing the novels) does not have the needed time to concoct new original stories. Several animated series are also being considered, including a series already ordered about the Sea Serpent fleet of Corlys Velaryon.
