Shocking Update: Harvey Weinstein Rushed to Emergency Heart Surgery – Is He Recovering?

Harvey Weinstein was abruptly taken to Bellevue Hospital in New York on Sunday night, where he underwent a medical procedure and heart surgery on Monday, as stated by his spokespeople.

The ex-Hollywood film tycoon, currently serving a 16-year jail sentence in his California rape case and held in custody in New York pending retrial on rape charges in the state, was rushed to the hospital due to multiple health concerns, as informed by his publicist Juda Engelmayer and prison advisor Craig Rothfeld.

“Mr. Weinstein has undergone a procedure and heart surgery today. He is out of surgery and on the path to recovery,” Rothfeld announced on Monday in a statement to The Times. “As we’ve repeatedly stressed, Mr. Weinstein has a host of serious health problems that require continuing attention. We are thankful to the administrative team at the New York City Department of Correction and Rikers Island for promptly ensuring his transfer to Bellevue Hospital.”

Engelmayer chose not to disclose any more information regarding Weinstein’s medical procedure.

In July, the 72-year-old was admitted to the medical institution for treatment of COVID-19, dual pneumonia, and other health problems, which include diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, and fluid accumulation in his heart and lungs.

The producer behind “Shakespeare in Love” and “Pulp Fiction” was previously admitted to Bellevue in late April following a New York appeals court’s overturning of his 2020 rape conviction.

In May, the prosecutors requested a retrial during a hearing at a Manhattan courthouse. Weinstein had previously appeared in court using a walker, but attended the preliminary hearing in May in a wheelchair, pushed by a court officer.

The infamous studio boss was implicated by investigations in the New Yorker and New York Times, which ignited the 2017 #MeToo movement, making Weinstein one of the most notorious individuals to face legal consequences in its aftermath. Despite his denial of the allegations of rape or sexual assault, he was originally sentenced in 2020 to 23 years in prison in New York for allegedly assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haley and aspiring actress Jessica Mann. The state appellate court overturned the verdict last spring, ruling that the judge overseeing Weinstein’s 2020 trial had prejudiced his case by permitting four women who had accused Weinstein of assault to testify, even though their claims were not part of the case.

The appeals court ruled that the trial judge also made a mistake by allowing prosecutors to question Weinstein about uncharged and old allegations if he chose to testify.

As reported last week, prosecutors have revealed that they are taking measures to potentially charge Weinstein with up to three additional sexual assaults, according to the Associated Press. Prosecutors have reportedly begun presenting evidence to a grand jury concerning up to three previously uncharged allegations against the disgraced mogul – two sexual assaults in the mid-2000s and another in 2016.

An imminent vote on a possible new indictment is expected, as stated by the AP. Weinstein’s retrial is tentatively set to start on Nov. 12 and he was originally scheduled to return to court for a pretrial hearing on Sept. 12, as per jail records.

On a related note, last week the U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service announced the dismissal of two charges of indecent assault against Weinstein due to the lack of a “realistic prospect of conviction.” In 2022, he was charged with two counts of indecent assault against a woman in London for alleged offenses from 1996, as reported by the BBC.
