Shocking News: Patti Scialfa’s Battle with Multiple Myeloma Unveiled in Latest Springsteen Documentary!

Patti Scialfa, a loyal E Street band member and wife to Bruce Springsteen, has publically confirmed that she has been fighting blood cancer for approximately six years now.

The 71-year-old Scialfa disclosed this information in “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,” a world tour documentary that debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday. Scialfa was not present at the premiere of the film, which was attended by Springsteen, his manager Jon Landau, and fellow bandmate Steven Van Zandt.

Scialfa revealed that she is battling multiple myeloma, a type of cancer in which cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow, eventually replacing healthy blood cells, as explained by the Mayo Clinic.

“Being on tour has become a challenge for me. I was diagnosed with early-stage multiple myeloma in 2018, while Bruce and I were performing on Broadway in ‘Springsteen on Broadway’. This condition has affected my immune system,” Scialfa shares in the documentary.

She further expressed that she must “be cautious about my activities and the places I visit” due to her health condition.

“Occasionally, I manage to make it to one or two shows and perform a few songs on stage. That’s been a delight. That’s my normal now, and I am content with it,” she said during an interview for the documentary, which features footage of her performing over the years.

Scialfa has been a part of the E Street band since 1984, being the only female member of the group. She is responsible for backing vocals, and also plays the tambourine and guitar. She tied the knot with the Boss in 1991, after his divorce from actor Julianne Phillips in 1989, and has been touring and performing with the 74-year-old superstar for many years.

“‘Fire’ is always enjoyable to sing. It’s quite personal in many ways. You get to see aspects of our relationship that are usually hidden,” Scialfa says in the film during footage of her and Springsteen’s duet. “Sharing the stage with Bruce again is thrilling. … Every evening on this tour is a chance for the band to rejoice.”

On the other hand, Springsteen has also been in health-related news over the past year. Last year, the “Dancing in the Dark” and “Born in the U.S.A” singer had to postpone several concerts due to his digestive illness, peptic ulcer disease, which is not mentioned in the documentary. Later that month, he and the E Street Band announced the postponement of the remainder of their 2023 tour dates for him to continue his treatment.

The tour resumed in March with 11 rescheduled shows in the U.S., including two at SoFi Stadium, before moving to Europe and then back to the U.S. The tour is set to reach Baltimore on Friday, play in Asbury Park, N.J., two days later, and then head to Canada for shows running until late November. After another break, the band plans to return to Europe in 2025.

Last week, in an interview with The Times, Van Zandt affirmed that Springsteen is doing “exceptionally well.”

“He is back to his usual self,” the guitarist commented. “I believe we made the right decision by playing it safe, taking some extra time off, and letting him recover. He’s been doing great, really fit.”
