If you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy and Elite, here’s some good news. Carlos Montero, the mastermind behind the sultry teen drama, is crafting a high-stakes medical drama for Netflix, and the first images have just been released.
Netflix is set to release not one, but two medical dramas in the near future. A few weeks ago, it was announced that Netflix had commissioned a project named Pulse, a fictional series created by Zoe Robyn (The Equalizer), set in Miami’s busiest level 1 trauma center.
A Spanish Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix
However, that’s not the only Grey’s Anatomy-style series that the U.S. streaming giant has in store for its subscribers. It recently unveiled images of a Spanish medical drama! On Netflix Spain’s X (ex-Twitter) account, subscribers got a sneak peek of this series from Carlos Montero, the creator of Elite.
The series, titled Respira (or Breathless in English), immerses us in the daily life of Joaquín Sorolla public hospital in Valencia, where lives are saved every day. Doctors and residents work tirelessly, their lives intertwined with the frenetic pace of the emergency room, where tensions, emotions, and even desires stir the hearts of an increasingly exhausted staff. The complex situation of the healthcare system leads to an unprecedented scenario…
Written by Carlos Montero, Carlos Ruano, Guillermo Escribano, and Pablo Saiz and directed by David Pinillos and Marta Font, this new Spanish series is Carlos Montero’s latest venture with Netflix after Elite, Feria: The Gleam of Darkness, After You, Chaos, and Every Time We Loved Each Other.
“The initial idea for this series was born out of this paradox, this dilemma: to save the healthcare system as a whole, we may have to abandon the patients,” he told Variety, “It’s obviously a very extreme premise, but I think there’s a very rich opportunity to tell stories.”
In addition to a powerful plot, Breathless will be backed by Netflix’s resources to deliver a top-notch medical drama with a modern visual identity that combines spectacular medical cases, touching personal dramas, and a breath-taking pace.
The cast features popular Spanish actors and actresses, including Najwa Nimri (Money Heist), Aitana Sánchez Gijón (Parallel Mothers), Blanca Suárez (Cable Girls), Manu Ríos (Elite), Borja Luna (Cable Girls), Ana Rayo (Central Market), and Alfonso Bassave (One Two Three, Grand Hotel).
With the series’ production well underway, we can expect Netflix to release Breathless soon. However, no official release date has been announced yet.
