Jane Fonda, over the span of her remarkable career, has been the recipient of accolades from prestigious institutions including the Cannes and Venice film festivals, the American Film Institute, the Producers Guild of America and, as recently as three years ago, the Golden Globes.
In February, Fonda will be adding another feather to her cap as she becomes the 60th awardee of the highest honor from SAG-AFTRA, the SAG Life Achievement Award, in recognition of her exceptional career and humanitarian contributions.
At the ripe age of 87, Fonda will accept this honor at the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards on Feb. 23, in a ceremony that can be viewed live on Netflix.
Expressing her gratitude, Fonda said, “I’ve spent nearly all my life in this industry, and there’s no award comparable to the one given by your colleagues. SAG-AFTRA is relentless in its efforts to safeguard the rights of the working actor, ensuring fair treatment for all union members. I am honored to be part of this organization as we strive to shield the performers of future generations.”
The daughter of the renowned Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda debuted in the film industry with the 1960 romantic comedy “Tall Story”. She achieved her highest acclaim and commercial success in a series of 1970s films, bagging Oscars for her performances in “Klute” and “Coming Home”. She also starred in the politically-charged thriller “The China Syndrome”. Fonda’s activism, especially her participation in the antiwar movement during the Vietnam era, made her a controversial figure.
Fran Drescher, SAG-AFTRA President, lauded Fonda, stating, “Jane Fonda has been a pioneering force and an exceptional talent, shaping the face of the entertainment industry, advocacy, and culture with her unwavering zeal. We salute Jane not just for her artistic genius but also for the profound legacy of activism and empowerment she has forged. Her courageous honesty has served as a beacon for many of us in our field.”
