Next month’s “Wicked” film star, Cynthia Erivo, has publicly expressed her disapproval of a fan-adjusted movie poster which bears similarity to the Broadway show’s poster.
A TikTok video was shared by a fan that put side by side the two posters and illustrated the modifications being implemented. Erivo, who portrays the green-skinned sorceress Elphaba, a character inspired by the Wicked Witch of the West from the iconic “Wizard of Oz” film, is depicted with a smirking red mouth and a dark shadow cast over her eyes by her wide-brimmed witch hat in the poster. Pop superstar Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, is seen whispering into Elphaba’s ear in the poster. Her hand is adjusted to a higher position, however, her hair and facial features remain untouched.
In an Instagram story where she posted the modified version of the poster, Erivo called it degrading, stating, “This is the most outlandish and insulting thing I have encountered.”
She stressed that the authentic poster is an ARTISTIC RENDERING and she is a living, breathing human being, justifying her artistic decision to look directly at the camera, addressing the viewer.
Erivo emphasized the power of non-verbal communication, stating, “We communicate without uttering a word, through our eyes.”
Referring to the original poster, Erivo stated, “Our poster is a tribute, not a mockery. Altering my face and concealing my eyes is tantamount to erasing my existence. And that is profoundly heartbreaking.”
The original “Wicked” musical is a stalwart of Broadway, having opened in October 2003 and continuing to run to this day. The plot is derived from a 1995 novel of the same title, offering a revisionist interpretation of “The Wizard of Oz” story, where the wicked witch takes center stage.
The film is a rendition of the musical’s first act, with a sequel slated for release in November 2025.
