The animation studio Fortiche (Arcane) is interested in adapting a popular 37-volume manga, highly appreciated by readers of Japanese comics, into a series.
Could the manga Vagabond, nearly thirty years old, finally be adapted into an anime? This significant work by Takehiko Inoue (Slam Dunk) in 37 volumes (available in France from Delcourt/Tonkam) tells the story of the legendary Miyamoto Musashi, based on the novels Stone and Sword and Perfect Light by Eiji Yoshikawa.
A French studio to adapt the manga into a series?
Famous swordsman Musashi, known for his feats and writings, is one of the most iconic figures of feudal Japan. Numerous films have been dedicated to him, including a memorable trilogy with the legendary Toshirō Mifune in the leading role.
The success of the manga Vagabond can be attributed as much to its renowned hero as to the striking beauty of Takehiko Inoue’s artistry. Its popularity should have logically led to an animated adaptation — however, no such project has ever been initiated. Things could change, though, thanks to the French studio Fortiche (Arcane).
In an interview with Crunchyroll, the studio’s co-founder, Pascal Charrue, expressed his dream of adapting Vagabond into an animated series. This statement immediately excited fans of the manga and Arcane, although the project seems very speculative at this point:
The first adaptation that comes to mind would be Vagabond, by Takehiko Inoue. It’s a masterpiece of incredible depth, with beautiful illustrations that would be fascinating to animate.
A project approved by fans, but which does not seem close to realization
At this point, there’s no indication that contact has been made with the author. And for a good reason: Takehiko Inoue is known for his extreme precision and control over his works. He even personally handled the adaptation of his other popular manga Slam Dunk into a feature film (The First Slam Dunk), a true gem of animation that comes highly recommended.
Nevertheless, this mere mention has been enough to reignite the hopes of many fans who have been dreaming of a worthy adaptation of Vagabond for years. However, patience will be needed before this dream can become a reality, as Fortiche is currently working on new projects in the League of Legends universe, from which Arcane also originates.
Both seasons of Arcane are available exclusively on Netflix.
