Lord of the Rings: Fan Favorite Character Finally Appears in ‘Rings of Power’ Season 2 First Photos!

Rory Kinnear steps into the role of fan-favorite character Tom Bombadil in the upcoming second season of the series “The Rings of Power” streaming on Prime Video.

Fans of The Lord of the Rings are in for a treat. A popular character from the books who was absent in Peter Jackson’s films is set to make his grand debut in the second season of Prime Video’s series, The Rings of Power. Rory Kinnear will portray this character, Tom Bombadil, a role that has been previously announced.

When Rory Kinnear’s casting was first announced, the exact character he would be playing was not revealed. Prime Video has now released the first photos of the actor on the series set:

Eldest, that’s what he is.

Who is Tom Bombadil?

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s works, Tom Bombadil rescues Frodo and the other Hobbits from various dangers. In season 2, Bombadil encounters the Stranger (Daniel Weyman) and his friends Nori the Pievelus (Markella Kavenagh) and Poppy (Megan Richards) during their journey to the east of Middle-earth.

It is suggested that the Stranger is Gandalf, while the Pievelus are nomadic ancestors of the Hobbits. Tolkien was vague in his description of Bombadil, who is known to be ancient, powerful, but unable to partake in a battle against Sauron.

Character Insights from the Creators

In our story, he’s journeyed to the lands of Rhûn, which we learn were once Edenic, green, and beautiful, but are now a sort of deathly desert,” J.D. Payne, co-creator of the series, explained to Vanity Fair. “Tom went there to see what happened during his various wanderings.

He adds: “When he finally crosses paths with the Stranger, one could say he has a desire to try to prevent the destruction that occurred there from spreading to his beloved lands of the West. He pushes the Stranger to his limits, knowing he will eventually protect the entire natural world he cares about. I would say that our Tom Bombadil is slightly more interventionist than in the books, but only by about 5 to 10 percent.

He’s whimsical and magical, bordering on the ridiculous. His design and function are rooted in Norse myths and have deep roots in European fairy tales,” says Patrick McKay, the other co-creator of the series. Payne adds: “Tom is a kind of curiosity within this structure because even though he’s darker, Tom Bombadil sings and recites verses that could be nursery rhymes or children’s poems. He kind of defies the tonal shift of the rest of the season and provides a real point of light in the midst of a sea of darkness.

The second season of The Rings of Power premieres on August 29 on Prime Video.
