Breaking News: Two New ‘Lord of the Rings’ Movies Announced! ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ Coming First!

Are you prepared to journey back to the mystical land of Middle-earth?

J.R.R. Tolkien’s captivating universe in “The Lord of the Rings” is set to be revisited in two new films currently in the works, as revealed by New Line and Warner Bros. on Thursday. The dynamic team of director Peter Jackson and scriptwriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who were behind the immensely successful “Lord of the Rings” trilogy during the early 2000s, will join forces once again to produce these forthcoming films.

Familiar face Andy Serkis, a veteran from the original “Lord of the Rings” series, will both star in and direct the first of these new films, provisionally named “The Hunt for Gollum.” In the first set of films, Serkis provided the voice and motion capture for the intriguing, large-eyed and scarcely-dressed character, Gollum. The screenplay will be crafted by Walsh and Boyens, in collaboration with writers Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.

Serkis took to Instagram to share the exciting news, posting a picture of himself alongside his “Lord of the Rings” character. His caption read, “We is baaaaak, Precious!,”. In a press release, the “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” actor expressed his eagerness to work again with Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens, referring to them as unmatched custodians of Middle Earth.

“The anticipation is simply overwhelming,” he added, hinting at the franchise’s return to its original New Zealand locations.

In a shared statement, Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens echoed the feeling, stating that it was a distinguished privilege to revisit Middle-earth with their esteemed colleague and ally, Serkis.

No further details were disclosed by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line regarding the second film.

The initial “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, released in the early 2000s, was not just a box-office sensation but also a wonder on the awards circuit. The series received an impressive 30 Academy Award nominations across its three films, winning 17 Oscars. At the 76th Academy Awards 20 years ago, “The Return of the King” clinched the best picture award. Jackson received his first directing Oscar for the film.

Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, co-chairs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, hailed the enduring influence of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and reaffirmed their dedication to translating Tolkien’s vision to the screen with Serkis’ “The Hunt for Gollum.”

“We are committed to maintaining the high standards that are a defining characteristic of our approach as we aim to contribute further to the ‘Lord of the Rings’ cinematic legacy,” De Luca and Abdy stated.

David Zaslav, Chief Executive of Warner Bros. Discovery, reportedly disclosed in a Thursday earnings call that “The Hunt for Gollum” is expected to premiere in 2026.
