Some viewers have even found the personal accounts of the “real” Martha, thereby revealing her name, without evidence that she is indeed the correct person. As for the assailant, a close collaborator named Sean Foley has been wrongly implicated, prompting Richard Gadd to speak out.
The Creator Speaks Out
In a story posted on his official Instagram account, he wrote: “Hello everyone, people I love, have worked with, and admire – including Sean Foley – are being unfairly singled out. Please do not speculate about the identities of the real people. This is not in any way the purpose of our series.“
Regarding the rape scene, the creator hopes that victims will feel less ashamed after watching this series. In a video published by Netflix, he stated: “I hope they will feel encouraged to acknowledge this trauma in their lives and confront it without feeling that it diminishes them as individuals. I hope it brings peace. I think it would have helped me.“
