Just as Zendaya has contributed to the pattern of “Spider-Man” co-stars becoming romantic partners, the actress has also lived up to another franchise expectation.
The “Challengers” star is conscious of the so-called “pipeline” that sees female leads from the “Spider-Man” series eventually take on roles in films centered around tennis. Her acknowledgement of this trend came earlier this week during her appearance on “Good Morning America“, where she was promoting “Challengers” alongside co-stars Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor.
During the interview, host Robin Roberts presented Zendaya with a meme that featured six images, two each of her (who portrayed MJ, Peter Parker and Spider-Man’s romantic interest), Kirsten Dunst (also MJ), and Emma Stone (who portrayed Gwen Stacy, another love interest). Three of the pictures depicted the actresses in their respective “Spider-Man” roles.
The remaining three images? They showed Dunst in the 2004 romantic comedy “Wimbledon,” Stone as Billie Jean King in 2017’s “Battle of the Sexes,” and Zendaya in her current role as tennis coach Tashi Donaldson in “Challengers.”
“this spider-man to tennis pipeline is something serious,” was the comment accompanying the meme in the tweet.
The group reacted with laughter upon seeing the post.
“You, Emma Stone, Kirsten Dunst … now you’ve all played roles as tennis players!,” Roberts exclaimed. “What’s this pipeline?”
“I have seen this,” said Zendaya, the “Euphoria” star. “This is so cool.”
In the three latest “Spider-Man” films, Zendaya played the love interest MJ of her real-life boyfriend Tom Holland, marking the first inclusion of these movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She followed in the footsteps of Dunst, who acted as Mary Jane alongside Tobey Maguire in the original trilogy from the 2000s, and Emma Stone, who starred opposite Andrew Garfield in 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” and its 2014 sequel.
Zendaya joked, “I was like, maybe it’s just a prophecy that I need to fulfill.”
The superhero franchise is accustomed to jokes about its actors: Holland, Garfield, and Maguire all donned their Spider-Man costumes again for the 2021 multiverse crossover “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” and they recreated another meme on set by taking a photo of them all pointing at each other.
“It’s quite amusing, isn’t it? I don’t know,” Zendaya added. “I suppose it worked out for all of us.”
“Challengers” hit the theaters on Thursday.
