As the series “Alien: Earth” is set to premiere tomorrow on Disney+, we’re here to answer the burning question every dedicated fan of the franchise is asking!
“Alien: Earth” is the first television series from the iconic horror science-fiction franchise directed by Ridley Scott. Like any new addition to this universe, the dedicated fans will want to know where it fits in the overall timeline. Although the answer is now clear, it’s interesting to see how it evolved.
Before its premiere on Disney+ on August 13, the series is officially a prequel to the 1979 original film. The plot is set two years before the first movie, in 2120. This timeline almost parallels the original film, unlike the cinematic prequels Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, which take place respectively in 2093 and 2104.
A Revised Chronological Positioning
During a set visit by Gamespot in April 2024, showrunner Noah Hawley initially envisioned a different time period. During a roundtable discussion, he stated:
“I think we exist around the events of Aliens, James Cameron’s story. I haven’t had to be very specific yet, but the events of the first film are mentioned. I would say around the second film, before or just after.“
This positioning would have placed Alien: Earth and Alien: Romulus (2142) in the same era. However, the series is now a direct prequel to Alien, perhaps due to Romulus’ box office success or for other reasons. Hawley does, however, clarify that he only draws inspiration from the first two films.
With an exciting promise: Noah Hawley has hinted that future seasons of Alien: Earth could depict the events leading up to the 1979 film, Alien. To find out for certain, tune in every Wednesday on Disney+.
