Shocking Truth Revealed: What Alien Xenomorph Drool is Really Made Of!

The series “Alien: Earth,” now streaming its first two episodes on Disney+, harks back to an unexpected technique from the original 1979 film for creating its most gruesome visual effects.

When it comes to the secrets of movie-making, one might expect intricate recipes and high-tech products. But sometimes, reality is stranger than fiction! For “Alien: Earth,” which just premiered its first two episodes on Disney+ on August 13, the team at Wētā Workshop decided to continue a rather… surprising tradition.

Creature Supervisor for the series, Tim Domett, unashamedly admitted to GameSpot: “We use KY Jelly, just like in the original film.” Yes, that’s right, sexual lubricant! This technique dates back to the very first Alien film by Ridley Scott in 1979, where the infamous Xenomorph drool was already being made with this well-known product.

A Practical Choice Above All

This decision wasn’t just a whim of the team, but rather a response to very tangible requirements on set. “It’s safe for everything, especially when it comes into contact with people’s faces,” Domett explains during a set visit recounted by GameSpot. “The Xenomorph often towers over the actors, dripping onto their costumes.

Therefore, the safety of the actors is paramount. Imagine having to clean a toxic chemical off an actor’s face after every take! With lubricant, there’s no problem: it’s formulated to be skin-friendly.

Adjustments Based on Scenes

The team doesn’t just use the product as is. “We dilute it a bit if it needs to come out of the mouth, or if it needs to look a bit blue,” the supervisor explains. These minor tweaks allow them to adjust the texture and color depending on the specific needs of each sequence.

Tim Domett concludes with a touch of humor: “It’s a really sticky and gooey job for us!” A franchise that clearly never shies away from getting its hands dirty to create a perfect horror moment.
