Tom Cruise to Pull Off Epic Stunt for Olympics Closing Ceremony
Tom Cruise, known for his high-octane stunts in the “Mission: Impossible” series, is rumored to be planning a spectacular stunt for the Olympic closing ceremony.
According to reports, the 62-year-old actor will perform the stunt as the Olympic flag is transitioned from Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo to L.A. Mayor Karen Bass during the celebration on August 11. The idea was supposedly proposed by Cruise himself to the International Olympic Committee.
The Stunt Plan
The reported plan includes Cruise rappelling from the roof of the Stade de France down to the stadium field, carrying the Olympic flag. There are rumors that a stunt double may be used for this part, but no formal confirmation has been issued.
The broadcast will then switch to a pre-taped section showing the Academy Award-nominated actor skydiving towards the Hollywood sign. He will then pass the flag to athletes such as a cyclist, a skateboarder, and a volleyball player, symbolizing the transition to the host city of the 2028 Olympics.
The Hollywood Sign Sequence
The Hollywood sign sequence was reportedly filmed in March, according to TMZ. Given Cruise’s history of performing dangerous stunts, his skydive didn’t cause much concern. Earlier sightings of the actor speeding around Paris were also disregarded as they coincided with the filming of “Mission: Impossible 8” in Europe.
Cruise’s representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Times on Friday.
Paris 2024 Closing Ceremony
Under the direction of artistic director Thomas Jolly for Paris 2024, the closing ceremony, titled “Records,” is expected to be as dramatic as a Cruise movie.
The Stade de France is set to be converted into a massive concert hall, according to the official Olympic website. Over 100 performers, acrobats, dancers, and circus artists will transport spectators through time, bridging the past and future.
“We’re creating a highly visual, choreographic, acrobatic show with an operatic dimension to bid farewell to athletes from around the world,” Jolly stated. He added, “Together, let’s make this evening a memorable and conscious celebration, honoring the past and embracing the future.”
An insider told Deadline to “expect a major Hollywood production.”
Back in 2004, Cruise participated in carrying the Olympic torch in L.A. as it journeyed to Athens. He has shown his support for Team USA during the first week of the Paris Games, attending women’s gymnastics and swimming events.
“It’s awesome,” the “Top Gun: Maverick” star told Reuters. “Great stories, great athletes. It’s incredible what they have to do, the sense of accomplishment.”
