Kevin Spacey has been reported to be unwilling to vacate his Baltimore residence, even several weeks after it was purchased in a foreclosure sale, according to the buyer of the property.
The waterfront mansion, previously belonging to the “House of Cards” star, was foreclosed due to his failure to meet his monthly mortgage payments of $20,000, as reported by the Baltimore Banner. His financial struggle was worsened by numerous sexual assault allegations starting in 2017, which led to his downfall in the Hollywood industry.
Sam Asgari, a real estate investor based in Bethesda, Md., acquired the property for a sum of $3.24 million last month. However, despite the sale, Spacey has yet to leave the property, as reported by Asgari to a Baltimore news agency on Wednesday.
Asgari shared that Spacey has been insistent on not leaving, forcing him into negotiations with Spacey’s legal team. “He’s requesting six months to vacate the property, without paying anything in return,” Asgari stated.
Edward U. Lee III, Spacey’s lawyer and two-time Academy Award victor, has refuted the allegations, telling the media outlet, “Mr. Asgari’s accusation is incorrect.” Lee did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.
In 2017, Spacey bought the 9,000-square-foot property for $5.65 million. Following his dismissal from “House of Cards”, this became his primary residence.
Asgari, who gained recognition earlier this year after buying the childhood home of renowned Maryland financier Johns Hopkins, secured the purchase of Spacey’s mansion with a $100,000 deposit. Once the courts confirm the sale, he could initiate eviction proceedings against Spacey.
Struggling with debt and unable to cover his legal expenses, Spacey confessed to Piers Morgan in an interview in June that he was being compelled to move his possessions into storage.
“I’m unsure of where I’ll live next,” he admitted. The Daily Mail also reported that Spacey put his London penthouse on the market this month.
Spacey, one of the first figures associated with the “Me Too” movement, was accused of sexual harassment in 2017 by Broadway actor Anthony Rapp. Rapp alleges that Spacey made an inappropriate sexual advance towards him in the 1980s, when Spacey was 26 and Rapp was just 14.
Spacey responded to these allegations on social media, stating that he does not remember the incident. “But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he has described carrying with him all these years,” he added.
Netflix’s “House of Cards” dismissed Spacey following Rapp’s allegations, and he was also removed from Ridley Scott’s film project “All the Money in the World.”
Spacey has since faced numerous other allegations of sexual assault and misconduct from several other men, all of which he has denied. These accusations have led to legal proceedings in both the U.S. and U.K. Additionally, he lost a $31-million judgment to “House of Cards” production company MRC for violating their sexual harassment policy, as previously reported by The Times.
In 2022, Spacey was found not guilty in Rapp’s federal civil suit against him. Last year, a London jury acquitted him on nine criminal counts of sexual assault.
However, he still faces a separate civil suit from one of the four U.K. complainants, with a trial date anticipated in summer 2025, according to the Telegraph.
“Spacey Unmasked,” a two-part documentary broadcast by British television network Channel 4 in May, brought new allegations against Spacey from 10 men uninvolved in the London criminal case. The network claims in the documentary that Spacey “said that he had been provided with insufficient time and detail to respond to the testimonies in this film.”
Spacey contested this claim on X: “Over the last week, I have repeatedly requested that @Channel4 afford me more than 7 days to respond to allegations made against me dating back 48 years and provide me with sufficient details to investigate these matters. Channel 4 has refused on the basis that they feel that asking for a response in 7 days to new, anonymized and non-specific allegations is a ‘fair opportunity’ for me to refute any allegations made against me.
“I will not stand back and let a struggling network’s one-sided ‘documentary’ about me be used in their desperate attempt for ratings. The proper channel to handle allegations against me is not Channel 4,” he continued. “Each time I have been given the time and a proper forum to defend myself, the allegations have failed under scrutiny and I have been cleared.”
Actors Liam Neeson and Sharon Stone defended Spacey following the release of the documentary.
“Kevin is a good man and a man of character. Personally speaking, our industry needs him and misses him greatly,” Neeson told the Telegraph.
“I am eagerly awaiting Kevin’s return to work,” Stone told the outlet. “He is a genius. He is so elegant and fun, generous to a fault and knows more about our craft than most of us ever will.”
