As the new “Game of Thrones” spin-off, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” prepares to hit screens in mid-January, the release date for season 3 of “House of the Dragon” has been inadvertently leaked… thanks to Matt Smith!
In what can be described as a classic blunder… 2026 is set to be a busy year for the Game of Thrones universe on HBO Max. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the new spin-off series with a distinctly different tone, will make its debut on January 18, and we’ve been hearing for months about the return of House of the Dragon later in the year. But when? The answer remained a mystery until now.
It’s been over a year since fans of the Blacks and the Greens have been waiting for a date for their favorite show’s return. Now, thanks to Matt Smith who let the cat out of the bag probably sooner than intended, they are getting a more definitive answer!
What did Matt Smith reveal?
The former Doctor Who, who now portrays Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon, made an appearance on the British TV show This Morning on Friday, December 12. He was there promoting his new series The Death of Bunny Munro.
However, while briefly discussing season 3 of House of the Dragon, he casually dropped the critical information with a very British nonchalance: “I think it’s coming out next August” Boom!
You can watch the segment below:
What can we infer from this?
An August release date would align with what we were told earlier. Last September, Casey Bloys, the head honcho of HBO and HBO Max, told Deadline that season 3 would be aired right after the 2026 Emmy Awards eligibility period.
This period ends at the end of May, which led Deadline to speculate that a June 2026 release seemed likely. However, an August release date is entirely plausible.
It’s important to note that Smith said he “thinks” the series will be released in August, and without an official announcement from HBO, we can’t be sure this is accurate. So, we’ll have to wait and see.
