Recent award events have seen a noticeable trend on the red carpet: small red buttons adorning celebrities’ outfits. Most notably, all three members of the band Boygenius sported these buttons while accepting their recent Grammy awards. Emma Seligman, the creator of the film “Bottoms”, also wore one during the Spirit Awards.
The buttons are a symbol for the Artists4Ceasefire organization. Following the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas militants, which ignited the current regional conflict, the organization released an open letter endorsed by hundreds of celebrities, advocating for peaceful resolution.
The letter, which is addressed to President Biden, begins, “We unite as creatives and proponents, but more crucially, as human beings witnessing the distressing loss of life and unfurling atrocities in Israel and Palestine.”
The letter proceeds, “We implore your administration, Congress, and all global leaders, to respect all lives in the Holy Land and demand and enable a ceasefire without hesitation – a cessation to the bombing of Gaza, and the safe liberation of captives. Half of Gaza’s two million inhabitants are children, and a majority are refugees and their progeny being compelled to abandon their homes. It is imperative that humanitarian aid is allowed to reach them.”
The letter concludes, “We are driven by an unyielding determination to advocate for our shared humanity. We champion freedom, justice, respect, and peace for all individuals – and an overwhelming wish to prevent further bloodshed. We refuse to narrate to future generations about our inaction, that we simply stood by and did nothing.”
The open letter has been signed by current Oscar nominees including American Ferrera, Bradley Cooper, Lily Gladstone, and Mark Ruffalo. Other prominent signatories include Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck, Quinta Brunson, Joaquin Phoenix, Ryan Coogler, Dua Lipa, Jessica Chastain, Florence Pugh, Kirsten Dunst, Jordan Peele, Lupita Nyong’o, Cate Blanchett, Mahershala Ali, Rachel McAdams, Jenna Ortega, and Patti Smith.
An audible pro-Palestinian protest outside the Santa Monica venue interrupted last month’s Spirit Awards. This led the host, Aidy Bryant, and several presenters and winners to acknowledge the conflict during their speeches on stage.
