The acclaimed actress Rebel Wilson, and her team, have seemingly chosen to withhold certain sections of her autobiography “Rebel Rising” from reaching certain markets, possibly to avert legal disputes with her ex-co-star, Sacha Baron Cohen.
Following the release of her memoir in the United States, where she is best known for her roles in “Pitch Perfect” and “Senior Year,” HarperCollins has purportedly confirmed that particular editions of “Rebel Rising” will not contain a contentious chapter detailing Wilson’s experiences working with Cohen on the 2016 comedic movie “The Brothers Grimsby.” The Guardian stated on Thursday that this particular chapter, rumored to be titled “Sacha Baron Cohen and Other A—,” will appear as blacked-out lines in copies sold in Australia and New Zealand.
An official spokesperson for HarperCollins relayed in a statement shared with various media platforms that “Due to legal constraints, we have redacted one chapter in the Australian/New Zealand version and have included a relevant explanatory note. This chapter is just a small fragment of a much larger narrative and we can’t wait for readers to immerse themselves in Rebel’s story when the book is launched.”
Wilson’s representatives and HarperCollins did not immediately reply to The Times’ request for comment on Thursday.
While publicizing “Rebel Rising” in March, Wilson, 44, disclosed that Cohen was the “massive a—” who provided the inspiration for one chapter of her book. In an Instagram story that has since expired, she accused the “Borat” star, 52, of employing “highly expensive lawyers or PR crisis managers” to intimidate the publication of the chapter.
“The ‘a—’ that I am referencing in ONE CHAPTER of my book is: Sacha Baron Cohen,” she declared in the Instagram story.
Cohen’s representatives refuted what they termed Wilson’s “provably incorrect allegations” about his supposed behavior towards her during the filming of “The Brothers Grimsby” in March. The response cited “vast detailed evidence, including contemporaneous documents, film footage, and eyewitness testimonies from those present before, during, and after the filming of ‘The Brothers Grimsby.'”
In a preview published by People in late March, Wilson describes her co-star’s alleged behavior, stating that he would “mention that he desired me to be naked in a future scene,” despite her no-nudity clause. She also claimed that Cohen suggested a sexually explicit visual joke for the movie.
“The movie tanked, which to me was enough retribution. I’m not about canceling anybody and that’s not my motivation for sharing this story,” she penned. “I’m sharing my story now because the more women converse about things like this, the less it occurs.”
In the midst of the escalating Wilson-Cohen spat, the U.K. and Australia launches of “Rebel Rising” experienced delays. HarperCollins reportedly stated at the time that the release dates were “rescheduled to align with Rebel Wilson’s press tours.”
Readers in Australia and New Zealand aren’t the only ones lacking Wilson’s complete account of Cohen’s alleged behavior. HarperCollins informed The Guardian that U.K. editions of “Rebel Rising” will also have a redaction covering “most of one page,” “some other minor redactions,” and an “explanatory note.”
In a reaction to the “Rebel Rising” redactions, a spokesperson for Cohen claimed that “HarperCollins did not verify the facts of this chapter in the book before its release and took the sensible but extremely belated action of erasing Rebel Wilson’s defamatory claims once they were presented with evidence proving they were false.”
The spokesperson further commented, as shared with The Times on Thursday, that “Publishing false statements is illegal in the UK and Australia; this is not a ‘quirk’ as Ms. Wilson suggested, but a legal principle that has been in place for many hundreds of years. This is a clear triumph for Sacha Baron Cohen and verifies what we have been saying from the start — that this is provably false, in a deplorable and failed attempt to sell books.”
