Why Hasn’t Netflix Renewed Its Most Popular French Series Yet? Shocking Reason Revealed!

When will Omar Sy step back into the role of “Lupin”? Fans are eagerly awaiting the fourth season of the Netflix series, and here’s why.

This past October, after nearly two years of absence, Netflix continued the journey of Assane Diop, with Omar Sy reprising his role as Arsène Lupin in the highly successful third season.

With an open-ended conclusion that reshuffles the deck, viewers are now anxiously awaiting the announcement of a fourth season.

Is the show too expensive to produce?

Yet, seven months after the last episodes aired, there has been no official announcement. This is surprising given that the first two parts were filmed back-to-back and the third was confirmed during the launch of the season two trailer.

Though the creator George Kay has expressed hopes for a fourth season in interviews and Soufiane Guerrab (Guedira) has hinted at its possibility, renewal is yet to be confirmed.

One of the main reasons behind this delay is shared by a data expert, who analyzes weekly releases in his newsletter Netflix and Chiffres. He shared:

“Lupin” is an intriguing case because season 1 was a massive hit. Season 2, released just six months later, didn’t perform as well, and the recently released season 3 suffered a significant drop in viewership compared to season 1.

In general, these trends don’t bode well for the show’s future. But even with the decline between season 1 and season 3, it’s still one of the top 10 all-time international series on Netflix, thus it remains a huge success.

I believe the dilemma for Netflix/Gaumont is that a fourth season would be expensive to produce and its viewership would inevitably be lower than the previous season’s.”

Netflix: 13 series that will hook you from the first episode

Netflix has spared no expense in producing Lupin, filming at iconic locations ranging from the Louvre in season 1 to Place Vendôme in season 3. This allows France to shine on the global stage by featuring such exceptional locales, but it comes with a hefty price tag.

Additionally, Omar Sy is a highly sought-after actor both within and outside France…

Could a movie wrap up the storyline?

It’s hard to imagine Netflix abandoning its golden goose and secretly cancelling Lupin. Could the American giant be considering a new approach? That’s what our expert suggests:

“I presume there’s ongoing discussion, but if I had to guess, I’d bet on a feature film to conclude/reboot the series while leaving room for a continuation, whenever Omar Sy has the time and inclination. This approach has been successfully used by Luther, and the movie was a big hit for the service.”

Indeed, a Lupin movie would be a great way to both wrap up the Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre) storyline and provide a fitting end to our favorite gentleman thief…
