Vampire Interview: Shocking Reason Why the Series Radically Alters Major Novel Element Revealed!

The beloved vampires Lestat, Louis, and Claudia are making a comeback on our screens in a series adaptation of “Interview with the Vampire”. There’s a notable change involving the character of the young ghoul.

At long last, the series “Interview with a Vampire” is legally available in our region, after nearly two years of anticipation. Paramount+ has secured the first season, which has been making waves across the Atlantic.

The show is a faithful adaptation of Anne Rice’s gothic horror novel, chronicling the romantic escapades of New Orleans vampires Louis de la Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) and Lestat (Sam Reid) in the early 20th century. While the series takes a few creative liberties that don’t detract from its quality, the scriptwriters have made one significant change.

Claudia, A Key Character

In the 1994 movie version, Claudia’s character was played by a young Kirsten Dunst. While she’s portrayed as a 5-year-old girl in the novels, the scriptwriters decided to age her.

Indeed, in the “Interview with a Vampire” film, Claudia, who was turned by Louis and Lestat to save her from death, is 11 years old. This scriptwriting liberty allowed the studios to skirt around the country’s child labor laws that would have prevented Dunst from filming as much as they wanted.

In the case of a series, which lasts longer than a movie, the issue came up again. With shooting days that can extend up to 10 hours, it was impossible to cast a ten-year-old actress, as showrunner Rolin Jones explains in this interview:

“Claudia is a very important character in the series and in this universe, so we needed her to be as present as possible.”

In this series, Claudia is played by Bailey Bass, an actress who was 18 during the filming of the first season, even though her character is only 14. Portraying Claudia as a teenager going through an existential crisis adds a new layer of depth to this young vampire who has a peculiar parent-child relationship with Lestat and Louis.

This choice isn’t random. By selecting a legal-age actress, the producers avoid the criticism received by the 1994 film when a 12-year-old Kirsten Dunst was seen kissing a much older Brad Pitt. It’s a scene that Dunst herself doesn’t seem to have taken well…
