Breaking News! Daniel Day-Lewis Exits Retirement for Son’s Shocking Directorial Debut ‘Anemone’!

It seems that Daniel Day-Lewis’ retirement from the acting profession was more of a pause than a full-stop.

Returning to the silver screen after a seven-year break, the only actor to have bagged the best actor Oscar thrice, Day-Lewis is slated to appear in his son Ronan’s first film as a director, “Anemone.” According to a report by Variety, the Day-Lewis father and son duo co-wrote the film, which delves into the complex relationships among fathers, sons, and brothers, and the nuances of family ties.

Day-Lewis senior, 67, was snapped on the movie set in Manchester, England, last Sunday, as he rode a motorcycle alongside co-star Sean Bean, best known for his role in “The Lord of the Rings”. A couple of days later, Focus Features and Plan B Entertainment announced their joint venture in leading the project.

Peter Kujawski, chair of Focus Features, expressed his excitement to Associated Press about collaborating with “a brilliant visual artist” like Ronan Day-Lewis on his debut film, and with Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative partner. He praised their exceptional script and looked forward to bringing their collective vision to audiences with the Plan B team.

26-year-old Ronan Day-Lewis, an accomplished painter, has previously showcased his work in New York. His first international solo exhibition, “That Summer We All Saw Them,” premiered in Hong Kong this Tuesday.

Daniel Day-Lewis, who announced his retirement from acting in 2017, just before receiving another best actor nomination for the 2018 film “Phantom Thread,” didn’t provide any reason for his decision.

“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor,” his agent Leslee Dart told Variety at that time. “He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

In a later interview with W Magazine, the “Lincoln” star admitted that he hadn’t found a specific reason for his decision.

“I haven’t figured it out. But it’s settled on me, and it’s just there,” he said. “All my life, I’ve mouthed off about how I should stop acting, and I don’t know why it was different this time, but the impulse to quit took root in me, and that became a compulsion. It was something I had to do.”

Day-Lewis added, “I have great sadness. And that’s the right way to feel. How odd would it be if this was a joyful leap into a whole new life. Since the age of 12, I’ve been drawn to acting, and everything outside of the theater — that beacon of light — seemed overshadowed.”

During the National Board of Review Awards in January, Day-Lewis reunited with his “Gangs of New York” director Martin Scorsese, who teased the possibility of the actor’s comeback to the industry.

“We did two films together, and it’s one of the greatest experiences of my life,” Scorsese said while receiving directing honors for “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

“Maybe there’s time for one more,” he speculated.

Although Focus Features has yet to announce a release date for “Anemone,” the distribution company revealed that Ben Fordesman (“Love Lies Bleeding”) is the director of photography, Jane Petrie (“The Crown”) is the costume designer and Chris Oddy (“Zone of Interest”) is the production designer.

The future acting plans of Day-Lewis remain unclear. The Times was unable to get a response from a representative for further comment on Wednesday.
