Peter Jackson’s Unseen Episode Revives Best Documentary Series Ever After 30 Years!

Disney+ subscribers can now access a 1996 documentary series, complemented by a new episode directed by Peter Jackson (“Lord of the Rings”).

Could the fifth Beatles member be none other than… Peter Jackson? While the New Zealand filmmaker has not released a movie in eleven years (since the last part of his Hobbit trilogy), he has not been idle. Over the past decade, Peter Jackson has dedicated himself to creating ambitious documentaries about the famous English pop group.

Peter Jackson’s Expertise in Documentary Filmmaking

After “They Shall Not Grow Old” in 2018, a documentary about the battles fought by New Zealand troops during World War I, his collaborations with the Beatles have since taken up most of his time.

In 2021, the filmmaker directed the documentary series Get Back, providing an unprecedented look at the recording of the English quartet’s final album. Two years later, Peter Jackson directed the music video for “Now and Then,” a final version of a demo recorded by John Lennon in 1977 (three years before his murder).

But the collaboration doesn’t stop there, as the filmmaker now reveals the restoration of the legendary documentary series The Beatles Anthology. First aired in 1995, this eight-episode program tells the story of the band in their own words (at the time, three Beatles were still alive: Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison, who passed away in 2001) using exceptional archival footage.

A Great Gift for Beatles Fans!

When it was first broadcast, this documentary met with global success. Aired in 94 countries, the series was later released on VHS and DVD with many bonus features. However, the program then fell somewhat into obscurity, known only to the most dedicated fans of the band.

The eight episodes of the documentary series arrive in a restored version supervised by Peter Jackson. The director has also created an entirely new ninth episode, which serves as a making-of the program and also delves into the fascinating creation of John Lennon’s two posthumous songs: Free as a Bird and Real Love. A real treasure for fans!

The complete documentary series The Beatles Anthology is now exclusively available on Disney+.
