Breaking: ‘Practical Magic 2’ Confirmed! Will Kidman and Bullock Reprise Their Roles?

Get ready for some more late-night margarita magic.

Work has begun on “Practical Magic 2,” and discussions are underway for Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman to reprise their roles as the witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, according to Variety.

The news was shared by Warner Bros. on TikTok, accompanied by a snippet from the 1998 romantic-fantasy hit film. The caption read: “It’s official… Practical Magic 2 is happening!”

It’s anticipated that Bullock and Kidman will step into producer roles, says Variety, along with Denise Di Novi, who was the producer for the first film and is recognized for her work on women-centric films such as “Heathers” and “Little Women.” Akiva Goldsman, the Oscar-winning writer of ‘A Beautiful Mind’ and the scriptwriter for the original film, is slated to handle the screenplay.

The original movie revolved around Sally and Gillian, two sisters who are the latest in a long line of witches, taught practical magic by their aunts following the sudden death of their parents. A series of events leads to the sisters reviving Gillian’s abusive ex-boyfriend and battling his malevolent spirit while also dealing with a curse that guarantees the death of any man who falls for an Owens woman.

The Times, in its 1998 review of the initial film, compared the duo to the single enchantress of “Bewitched,” attempting to suppress her magic while living a normal life. It highlighted Sandra Bullock as a fitting Elizabeth Montgomery substitute and Nicole Kidman as an ever-alluring presence.

“Bullock and Kidman deliver spirited performances, and [Stockard] Channing and [Dianne] Wiest portray the quirky aunts with fitting over-the-top acting,” the review continued. “However, it fails to amount to anything unique. Whether it’s good or bad, there isn’t a standout scene.”

Regardless, fans will be thrilled by the announcement of the sequel, particularly after a 2019 announcement about an HBO prequel series featuring the sisters’ aunts, Franny and Jet, as young witches. The project was cancelled in February, even as Di Novi hinted at another return to the small-town Massachusetts setting.

“I believe the fans will be ecstatic,” she told UPI in February, adding that something was “in the works” in the universe of “Practical Magic.”

Details of the project are still under wraps, and a release date is yet to be confirmed. In the meantime, fans can watch “Practical Magic” on Max.
