What is the Mandela Effect?
Are you familiar with the Mandela Effect? This is a phenomenon in which a group of people collectively remember an event that never actually happened or not in the way they believed it to.
For instance, many viewers are convinced that the baby at the end of Rosemary’s Baby is seen, even to the point of describing it, even though it never appears. Even more bizarre: for years, internet users were searching for traces of a 1990s film, Shazaam, featuring the American comedian Sinbad. Yet, this movie never existed.
The phenomenon is named after Nelson Mandela, as many people were convinced that the former South African president died in prison during the 1980s. Interestingly, the TV show Charmed has also fallen victim to this Mandela Effect with regards to episode 22 of season 3, which marks Shannen Doherty’s last appearance. Her character, Prue, is indeed killed off. Prue, the eldest of the Halliwell sisters, is replaced in the next season by Paige, the half-sister of Prue, Piper, and Phoebe, played by Rose McGowan.
Shannen Doherty’s Final Episode
At the start of the episode titled Goodbye, Prue and Piper (Holly Marie Combs) are gravely injured during a fight with the demon Shax, and Leo (Brian Krause) has to step in to save them. Later, the two sisters are unfortunately caught on camera by a news crew while using their powers. The world discovers that the Halliwells are actually witches, and they soon face harassment and scrutiny. A woman even shoots Piper with a rifle, who is taken to the hospital and dies from her injuries.
In Hell, Phoebe (Alyssa Milano), Cole (Julian McMahon), and Leo manage to negotiate with The Source and the wizard Tempus to turn back time. Piper and Prue are thus back home, just like at the start of the episode, still pursued by Shax. He once again gets the upper hand and leaves them unconscious. Since Phoebe is in Hell, she cannot call for Leo’s help. The episode ends with the door of the Halliwell house closing with Prue and Piper’s fate left unknown.
The rest, as you know, is history: Shannen Doherty exits, and season 4 begins with Prue’s funeral and the introduction of a new Halliwell, Paige.

The Phantom Episode or Scene
Yet, many internet users are convinced that Leo returns at the end of the episode to try and save the two witches. But the Whitelighter only manages to save Piper, and we supposedly see Prue die on screen. Some people go even further with their theory: they assert that Goodbye is a double 45-minute episode, and the additional episode, in which we witness Prue’s death, simply disappeared!
No one is able to locate this phantom episode, even in the physical editions of the Charmed box set. Even though there is no evidence to support the existence of this scene, it continues to fuel fantasies and discussion forums. This is proof of the impact that Charmed has left, almost twenty years after its conclusion.
“Charmed” is available on Prime Video.
