On the occasion of “Stranger Things” Day, which commemorates the day of Will’s disappearance, Netflix provided fans worldwide (including us) with the opportunity to attend the premiere… from the comfort of their computer screens.
With such a popular show comes a grand event. For the first time since the debut of Stranger Things in 2016, Netflix allowed fans from all over the world to digitally attend the global premiere of season 5. The event included interviews with the cast and crew, exclusive footage, and most importantly, the unveiling of the first 5 minutes of the new season before anyone else.
For French subscribers, it required staying up late (or getting up early) to follow the event which began at 2 a.m. local time, along with a solid grasp of English. If that wasn’t possible for you, don’t worry, we’ve got a recap of the highlights from the premiere.
Sommaire
The Stranger Things Spin-Off
The event kicked off in high gear with the introduction of Chronicles of 1985, the animated Stranger Things spin-off slated for 2026. The spin-off will take place between the events of season 2 and season 3, during the harsh winter of 1985, where Eleven and her friends must battle new monsters and unravel a paranormal mystery that is terrorizing their town.
Visually, this derivative series is quite captivating to watch: the likenesses of Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, and others are immediately recognizable. The Demogorgon remains as terrifying as ever and the 80’s ambiance is faithfully recreated. With this new production, Stranger Things will leave a little less of a void…
“One of the best series finales of all time”
Almost all of the Stranger Things actors took the time to answer questions from American journalist Joshua Horowitz and some fans. While they successfully avoided spoilers, they certainly ramped up our anticipation, particularly regarding the final episode.
Shawn Levy, the show’s producer, highlighted the brilliant work done by the Duffer brothers on the 8th episode, which will air in France on January 1st at 2 a.m.: “It’s one of the best series finales of all time,” he revealed (quite modestly). The finale especially moved Winona Ryder (Joyce), who couldn’t hold back her tears during the premiere.
David Harbour, on the other hand, confirmed that the ending will be “as beautiful as it is sad” and that each character will indeed have a conclusive ending. We can’t wait.
Unexpected guests… or not!
Speaking of David Harbour, he was indeed present at the premiere despite rumours of a falling out between him and his co-star Millie Bobby Brown. The two actors put an end to the rumours by appearing close and friendly in front of the fans.
This surely put a damper on the Daily Mail article published earlier in the week, claiming that Eleven’s actress had filed a complaint for moral harassment against Harbour prior to the shooting of season 5. This scene definitely reassured fans who are particularly fond of the father-son relationship between the two actors, both on and off the screen.
Fans were pleasantly surprised by another appearance: that of the actress who plays Kali aka 008, aka Eleven’s sister from season 2. Linnea Berthelsen walked the red carpet alongside the other Stranger Things actors, hinting at her return in the final season to battle Vecna.
The first 5 minutes revealed
We weren’t expecting much from these first 5 minutes of season 5 and yet, Netflix and the Duffer brothers certainly didn’t hold back. Not only is the sequence terrifying, but it also confirms a theory that some fans have been speculating since 2022: that Vecna was the one who kidnapped Will in 1983.
We now understand why the young boy has been feeling strange since his return: Vecna had black particles injected into him, irrevocably linking him to Dimension X. The main villain of Stranger Things has been using Will as a pawn since the beginning of the series and it’s highly probable that he will once again exploit him to destroy Hawkins and its inhabitants.
How will the young high school student manage to break free from his control? We’ll find out on November 27th on Netflix.
