Stranger Things Season 5: How This Star Helped Jamie Campbell Bower Become Vecna!

Regardless of one’s opinion on the finale of Stranger Things, one aspect that is universally agreed upon by fans is the exceptional performance of Jamie Campbell Bower. The English actor brilliantly portrayed the show’s primary antagonist, Henry Creel, also known as his monstrous alter ego, Vecna.

Vecna’s creation was inspired by a renowned cinema villain

As expected, this role necessitated substantial physical preparation, including up to seven hours of makeup for each day of filming. This grueling process was essential to accurately depict Vecna, whose appearance mirrors his deeply malevolent nature. Another significant challenge for Jamie Campbell Bower was identifying the right voice for the character.

“The script indicated that he had a deep and booming voice, so I had to find the truth in that,” he told Rolling Stone magazine. “Of course, I could have done a typical monster voice, and it would have worked. But there was something about this role, and where I was artistically at the time, that drove me to fully experience each moment. His voice had to come from a deeply authentic place.”

At the Duffer brothers’ request, Jamie Campbell Bower drew inspiration from Doug Bradley’s performance in the renowned horror franchise Hellraiser. This influence led to Vecna’s “precise, measured” speech. However, the actor’s preparation for the role also required significant mental exertion.

Physical preparation was accompanied by… musical preparation!

“At the beginning of preparation, I was mainly listening to folk or black metal, but as time went on, the music became harder and faster,” shared Bower, who is also the lead singer of the punk rock band Counterfeit. “Just before filming, I was nearly in the mindset of a boxer preparing to enter the ring.”

Jamie Campbell Bower also revealed how the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow greatly assisted him in reacquainting himself with the role before filming season 5. Deeply moved by Louis McCartney’s performance as Henry Creel, Bower replaced him for one performance – a surprise appearance that caused a stir on social media.

Have we truly seen the last of Vecna?

Despite mixed reactions to the finale, Vecna’s portrayer is proud to have been part of such a journey (the interview was conducted before the airing of the final episode):

Honestly, I don’t even recall the length of the final episode script, but it’s a huge culmination for a series that has accompanied viewers and actors since childhood. It’s not often that we get to be part of a project like this.

His next challenge is already set. After the world of Hawkins, he is about to enter the realm of The Lord of the Rings. Jamie Campbell Bower has just completed filming for the third season of The Rings of Power, in a role that remains a secret. Many fans are also hoping to see him reprise his role in the upcoming Stranger Things spin-off currently in development.
