Before “The Abandons” series on Netflix, writer Kurt Sutter – also the creator of “Sons of Anarchy” – crossed paths with a certain Taylor Sheridan a few years prior to the launch of “Yellowstone”.
Yet another Western on Netflix! The platform opened 2025 with “Dawn of America”, voted by viewers as the top new release of the year, and closes with “The Abandons”, a production led by Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey. This new series also boasts of a certain prestige, as it is the latest creation of Kurt Sutter.
What’s the connection between the new Western series and Yellowstone?
The American writer is notably known for creating the cult series Sons of Anarchy. This production, centered around a group of Californian bikers, introduced Charlie Hunnam to a wider audience. However, many of its fans are unaware that the series also paved the way for Yellowstone!
The first two seasons of the show saw Taylor Sheridan playing the role of the deputy police chief, David Hale. At that time, the future creator of Yellowstone harbored dreams of becoming a leading actor. But due to a lack of roles that matched his ambitions, he ultimately decided to leave his acting career behind and become a full-time screenwriter.
His role in Sons of Anarchy persuaded him to leave his acting career
Indeed, it was his role in Sons of Anarchy that hastened this career change. After two seasons in this secondary but popular role, Taylor Sheridan believed he could negotiate a pay raise.
The response from production was more than harsh: “Taylor Sheridan probably deserves to earn more, but we’re not going to pay him more because he’s not worth more, there are 50 others like him” (source: Deadline). Instead of meeting his demands, his character was suddenly killed off, struck by a car.
This dismissal, which Sheridan took very hard, convinced him to take control of his destiny. So, he fulfilled his Hollywood dream as a screenwriter: initially in cinema, with films such as Sicario and Hell or High Water, and then on television thanks to Yellowstone and his other successful series (Landman, Tulsa King…).
