Jennifer Esposito recalls an instance from 25 years ago when a producer almost ruined her career. Now, she’s using that fury as fuel for her first directorial venture.
According to the actress known for “Blue Bloods,” shortly after her breakthrough role in Spike Lee’s 1999 suspense film “Summer of Sam,” she was propelled into Hollywood fame. However, she was abruptly dismissed from a new film project just a week into shooting by a producer she chose not to identify, and for seemingly no reason at all.
Esposito described the producer as a notorious and ruthless figure, akin to the likes of Harvey Weinstein. She claimed that this man utilized his influential position to destroy her budding career when she was only 26.
Esposito alleges that this producer went out of his way to tarnish her reputation. He reportedly spread false rumors about her being a drug addict who would lock herself away in a trailer on set, which Esposito vehemently denies.
She also suspects that this same producer sabotaged her chance to be cast in “Charlie’s Angels” after she had already been extended an offer.
Esposito says her agency was aware of the producer’s actions but elected to stay silent due to his stature and connections within the industry. Eventually, she was dropped by her representation and spent two and a half years without any agent.
Esposito describes this period as extremely difficult, especially for a “young girl who had been dreaming about this since childhood.”
However, she also sees it as a transformative time. Without these experiences, she believes she wouldn’t have become the woman she is today or directed the film she just completed. Her movie, “Fresh Kills,” is a tribute to the young girl who was metaphorically “slaughtered” at 26.
“Fresh Kills,” which was released last Friday, marks Esposito’s debut as a director of a feature film. A feminist take on the traditional mafia movie, it tells the stories of the women behind the men who run an organized crime family. Co-stars include Emily Bader, Odessa A’zion, Domenick Lombardozzi, and Annabella Sciorra, another “Blue Bloods” alumna.
Esposito has a personal connection to the film as it’s set in the 1980s Staten Island, the neighborhood where she grew up.
She recalls witnessing a lot of violence in her childhood, stemming from the pervasive mafia presence in her community. She always questioned the source of their anger.
However, as she navigated through her life and career, she began to recognize that familiar rage within herself.
Esposito revealed that not many people initially believed in “Fresh Kills.” She was even offered substantial amounts of money to step aside and let a male director take over. She declined a $5 million offer to let a man direct and other lucrative offers for famous actors to replace her.
However, Esposito stayed true to her vision, even mortgaging her house to fund the project. It appears her gamble has paid off.
“Fresh Kills” premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival a year ago and has since won numerous awards at various film festivals. One review praised it as standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the best gangster films post-“Godfather.”
Esposito expressed her pleasure at how her characters have resonated with both male and female audiences on her “She Pivots” episode. She said this impactful connection is what she believes art should always strive to achieve.
