A year after the successful live-action adaptation by TF1, this iconic 80s manga by Tsukasa Hōjō returns to television, but in a new format.
The unforgettable theme song by Isabelle Guiard, three lovable super thieves, and a captivating storyline were the key elements of the animated series Cat’s Eyes that children born in the 80s/90s watched over and over on TV.
This adaptation of Tsukasa Hōjō’s manga (also known for City Hunter), which was published in the renowned Weekly Shonen Jump from 81 to 85, had not been given the same “touch-up” as other works from the era (like Captain Tsubasa / Olive and Tom, for example). That’s now changed. Under the guidance of Disney+, Cat’s Eyes is back as a new animated series featuring the return of our three heroines:
The Kisugi sisters run a café, ‘Cat’s Eye’, during the day and become thieves at night. But they’re not just any thieves. They only steal items that belonged to their father and disappeared without a trace many years ago. They believe that by gathering the entire collection, they’ll be able to find their father.
A fresh take!
This new version promises to be more contemporary while adhering to the current animation standards: it’s smoother, brighter, and some facial features (especially the eyes) are more expressive. While the team has taken some liberties with the character design, the outfits remain true to the 1983 anime.
Unlike the 80s version, which ‘Frenchified’ the characters and some locations (the action actually takes place in Japan), this Disney+ remake is a Japanese production. In the manga, Alex is called Ai, Silia is named Rui, and Tamara is known as Hitomi. If you’re planning to watch Cat’s Eyes in its original version, expect such changes.
It’s worth noting that the platform will release this remake in two parts: the first six episodes will be released weekly between September 26 and October 31. The second batch will be launched by Disney on December 26.
This new Cat’s Eyes series will help manga fans bridge the gap until the return of TF1’s live-action adaptation. With Camille Lou, Constance Labbé, Claire Romain in the lead, it is expected to make a big comeback in 2026. In short, we are far from having heard the last of these shape-shifters.
